After reading all of the thread, i can see a 2nd hand unit from a rover 75 should be a straight forward enough jobby for a defender ( simple wiring )

Does anyone have any experience fitting thermo tops from any other Land Rover range ( ie Disco or RR )?

There are a few 2nd hand LR units on the bay and funds are running low to go and buy a new one

The Freelander 1/L322/R75 one can be started or run with a simple switch or remote.

The D3/RRS one needs a WBUS communications bus controller to operate it. There are some relatively cheap third party controllers or Webasto options.

There are some refurbed units on the bay ( Type C universal ) as well as a L322 unit ( Type C )

Mines from a peugeot 807 / Citroen C8, they come mounted on a bracket complete with water pump, fuel pump, exhaust and air filter and don’t seem to sell for much. Simple +12v to fire it up.

Mines wired up with manual switches in the car for Heater & Fan and a controller for remote start via text Thumbs Up

Easily the best modification I’ve made. I’ve added a few pics to my thread.

Hey Martin,

How do you start a L322 unit with a simple switch? I couldn’t get ours from a TDV8 to fire manually off the car without BUS. Am I missing a trick, would be great for testing Mr. Green

Switching Pin 1 of the 6 pin plug to 12V should start it - same as FL/75 unit.

Do you know what year L322 your Thermo Top is from?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

It’s a 2008, and doesn’t fire with the +12 how strange. The +12v is how we trigger it on the Defender.

That's odd, as the factory L322 installation uses the pin 1 connection for the Telestart (remote fob) operation.

I have telestart which works, so must have been user error Embarassed I will check that out, in the end it was an easy fix as the circulation pump had failed so it was shutting down on temperature.

As far as I can see, all the L322 FBHs are wired the same.

This suggests the L322 Thermo Top sends a message out to the aircon ECU (ATC), which it needs a reply to in order to start up when using pin 1 to trigger it Sad  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I just had a look in the workshop manual and I have highlighted this in the past which seems identical to the wiki:

When parked heating/ventilation is selected on with the remote handset, the request is received by the FFBH receiver via the TV antenna and TV antenna amplifier. The FFBH receiver relays the request as a hardwired signal to the FFBH control module. On receipt of the request, the FFBH control module sends the request to the ATC module and the instrument cluster on the K bus. Parked heating/ventilation then operates as detailed above.

On receipt of the messages:
The climate set indicator on the TSD panel flashes at 2 Hz to indicate that parked heating/ventilation is active.
If the ambient temperature is less than 5 °C (41 °F), the GEM activates the door mirror heaters for 3 minutes.
If parked heating is activated, the ATC module:
- Energizes the changeover valve.
- Sends a K bus message to activate the FFBH.
- Operates the blower at speed 1.
- Opens the windscreen distribution doors in the heater assembly and closes the face and footwell doors.
If parked ventilation is activated, the ATC module: - Operates the blower at speed 1.
- Opens the face level distribution doors in the heater assembly and closes the windscreen and footwell doors.


Seems the car is very much in control of the whole operation. Shame as they are easy units to find.
