It's a bit simplistic to put that all on the pandemic - although that might suit senior management when it comes time to looking at their annual bonuses. Does the pandemic explain why the reported Land Rover sales were down 18.3%, while Jaguar sales were down 36.5%? Land Rover's sales for the 3 months prior to the pandemic hitting was already down 25.66% and the next quarter was down 37.94%, so wouldn't it be better to assume that the impact of the pandemic was a net fall of 12.28% and really only affected a single quarters figures? Q2 2021 (July, August & September) is down on previous year by only 5.90%. Q3 2021 (October, November & December) is down on previous year by only 5.09%. 16,286 new Defenders retailed in Q3 looks to be the headline, but JLR don't appear to be uploading the raw figures to their website yet; so it's impossible to view that in context with other model sales. |

Agreed. Before they blamed the downturn on China's economy even though all their competitors were still doing a roaring trade over there. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

Everything I've read online from all sources seems to just be cut & paste from this source:

If I understand that bottom graph correctly, they haven't performed well against their sales projections. WARNING.

So I guess Defender sales are quite disappointing at JLR HQ

In a word no - 100k per annum was the figure discussed. More concerning would be that Nitra was built to produce 150k vehicles per annum and on this year's performance it could be as low as 58k or just under 39% of capacity. |

It's interesting to look at D5 sales. Up to Dec 2019 they were averaging 3,745 per month, from January 2020 they have been averaging 1,904. In the quarter the new Defender started sales the average was 1,480 per month. It seems many potential D5 buyers have swapped horses. Anecdotally, that would be backed up by numerous posts from buyers on here. The new Defender was designed as a conquest vehicle - it was meant to pull new owners into the brand. At present, it just looks like it's cannibalising sales from within. |
