A dealer embellishing, never Laughing When I picked up my Defender at the end of Sept, my dealer stated they
had sold literally all their stock, they kept their demo Disco Sport to have something for prospects, they
we’re fighting with all the other dealers to secure a very small and limited inventory from LR to tie them over
until February when they hope to see supply return to normal. Most of their sales and deliveries currently
are based on custom orders, rather than walk in and drive out of forecourt inventory, as they have
Censored all to offer at present from a stock perspective.

Jaguar Land Rover sales fall by a quarter in 2020 due to pandemic

It's a bit simplistic to put that all on the pandemic - although that might suit senior management when it comes time to looking at their annual bonuses.

Does the pandemic explain why the reported Land Rover sales were down 18.3%, while Jaguar sales were down 36.5%?

Land Rover's sales for the 3 months prior to the pandemic hitting was already down 25.66% and the next quarter was down 37.94%, so wouldn't it be better to assume that the impact of the pandemic was a net fall of 12.28% and really only affected a single quarters figures?

Q2 2021 (July, August & September) is down on previous year by only 5.90%.

Q3 2021 (October, November & December) is down on previous year by only 5.09%.

I would not put my local sales guy in the senior management category Laughing he was most probably
wondering how will he earn any commission with not much to sell from October, they cannot recognise
the sale until the owner takes delivery, I saw this firsthand when I picked mine up at months end.

When you look at the supply chain, Australia 🇦🇺 is most probably not a LR priority, one of the
last places for the Defender to be launched, we did not get delivery of our pre ordered vehicles
at least 3-4 months after the US and Europe.. Gerry cannot be a fan of us in the colony’s Whistle yet another pommie bar steward down under

Sorry Zilch, I was composing a reply to Zed and your post came in the middle.

I'd like to draw a distinction between embellishing - the size of the fish you caught and information given to you by a dealer, perhaps in an attempt to close a deal.

For a dealer to say what has been reported shows more than a little contempt for the potential buyer.

16,286 new Defenders retailed in Q3 looks to be the headline, but JLR don't appear to be uploading the raw figures to their website yet; so it's impossible to view that in context with other model sales.

Agreed. Before they blamed the downturn on China's economy even though all their competitors were still doing a roaring trade over there. WARNING.

Yes Supacat, lazy journos just stealing from the press releases and not needing to make unnecessary trips away from home to get a glossy brouchure saying the same thing! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Confused

Is it too much for journalists to look into a story and not just regurgitate a press release - it doesn't take any unnecessary trips to analyse the data and see if the conclusions being presented actually add up!

If I understand that bottom graph correctly, they haven't performed well against their sales projections. WARNING.

So I guess Defender sales are quite disappointing at JLR HQ

I think its too closely matched price wise to the Disco 5 and RR Sport

Should have found itself maybe 5 to 10K less than same spec D5 - not the same price...

Also the D5 has way better financial incentives - works out about 10 to 15% less per month on Finance for similar spec and cost compared to Defender.

I guess they were hoping to charge a premium to recoup development costs.. on Defender?

I guess Covid and the resulting Financial Crisis has hit but looking at the other sales.. its not just that..

Also me - I started at D5 - decided to order the Defender - but I have to say I have also concidered the RRS and its similar money and there is some excellent deals on FFRR - that does not put it hugely more than the HSE D300 Defender on order.

In a word no - 100k per annum was the figure discussed.

More concerning would be that Nitra was built to produce 150k vehicles per annum and on this year's performance it could be as low as 58k or just under 39% of capacity.

It's interesting to look at D5 sales.

Up to Dec 2019 they were averaging 3,745 per month, from January 2020 they have been averaging 1,904.

In the quarter the new Defender started sales the average was 1,480 per month.

It seems many potential D5 buyers have swapped horses. Anecdotally, that would be backed up by numerous posts from buyers on here.

The new Defender was designed as a conquest vehicle - it was meant to pull new owners into the brand. At present, it just looks like it's cannibalising sales from within.
