Nice graphic, but simplistic. What change to the length of the order books? What sales are dealers taking to make JLR’s targets? What discounts to make targets? What effect the coming FFRR new model on old model sales? What effect in 2021 of the auto industry chip shortage and JLR’s allocation of resources to new models?

FFRR model run-out aside, the D5 is the ugly duckling of the family. What a pity it came to this. We’re keeping our D4 albeit its mileage is high. LR don’t sell a replacement with the same capacity and versatility. I don’t see the new Defender as successor to the old Defender or the Disco. I think Gerry killed the Disco. JLR is still the snake eating its own tail.

@Stuff : I almost agree with you completely.
But if it ever makes it to production, perhaps the Defender 130 will be a worthy replacement for D4. Trouble is, I suspect the price will be ridiculously high and out of the reach of most families who enjoyed their D3/D4 experience.

New Defender closely pipped into 2nd place by Evoque. It's best quarterly sales performance since launch.

What's most interesting is that the absolute sales is only just above the previous Q4 (16,963) but what has happened is other models around it have sold less.

It's worth noting that these lower sales of other models may be the effects of material shortages coming into play and JLR, as it has always stated maintaining supply to those models that make it the most money. If wholesale sales are roughly equated with production, then you can see how the lower value models have had production drastically cut.

Discovery sales continue to be the lowest performing.

There appears to be two clear clusters:

1 - Evoque RRS & Disco Sport

2 - Full fat RR, New Defender & Velar

With Discovery very much bringing up the rear.

Cumulative difference between retail and wholesales drops again, perhaps more sales from stock as people don't want to wait for personal orders?

There's a few assumptions in this but...it's looks like it's going to take until January 2022 before JLR recover the volume of "lost" sales from not having the new Defender in production before the old one ceased.

Defender tops sales for the quarter for the 1st time.

"Retail sales of all models were lower year-on-year with the exception of the new Land Rover Defender, which retailed 16,725 vehicles, up 70.4% year-on-year, making it our bestselling model in the quarter."

Interestingly, JLR has not published wholesale figures for the quarter (other than noting Defender wholesales was 14,305); but it seems clear from the figures and JLR's previous comments that production has been heavily skewed towards the models it has the highest margin on.

The contrast, year on year, with other models is quite stark, especially so when Q2 normally has the number plate change uplift in the UK:

Defender's sales are actually lower than in both of the previous quarters.

Are these your graphs Supacat? Still wondering at the dent in Discovery (principally) and RRS sales made by the ND, versus completely new buyers.

Also, the Toyota LC 76 has some fairly mighty numbers. It clashes with the point of view of many, notably some in LR, that a properly utilitarian vehicle is no longer in demand in the 21c of super comfy SUVs. And when you add the Wrangler, which whilst not fully utilitarian, is a very good value lifestyle off roader, (and we’ve yet to see what the Bronco will do), it shows that there is still a large market for vehicles that are not as complicated or as comfortable as the ND. A Defender created in this image could well have sold brilliantly, indeed as well as the ND is selling now, without LR poaching from their own line up, and yet still forging ahead with their other luxury models, maintaining a clear distinction between them. Monsieur Le Grenadier

So that's 26 V8s out there!

There's 1,296 hard tops, 64% in base spec, 6% in S spec, 21% SE spec & 9% HSE spec.

Split for all new Defenders is 82.85% diesel, 17.15% petrol.

MHEVs are 49.07% overall but last quarter was 86.08% & PHEVs are 0.33% with last quarter being 0.42%.

Also interesting to see they sold so many D240 First Editions in Q2 2021 despite them not having been orderable for nearly a year. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Remember those photos of rows of quarantined vehicles?

I wonder if with lack of parts to build new ones, they've had resources to go and fix up/rework them?

Or maybe they are so low on new parts they decided to raid the spare part kits for First Editions to get completed vehicles out the door?

Or the third option I can think of is these vehicles were built 1 or two years ago and held in storage by JLR as there was not the demand for them at the time?

I guess the only way of knowing might be to find someone with a newly registered First Edition and see where the VIN number puts production?
