South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
from https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-car...ds-spotted

"... appear to be testing a new bull bar and front winch combination for hardcore off-road enthusiasts. However, a check of the numberplate on a private website (as opposed to the DVLA site) details it as being powered by a petrol-electric drivetrain.

It’s the first time that we’ve seen a prototype for the new Defender without diesel power. Autocar understands that it will be offered with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines in 2020, although with no visible charging port seen through the disguise, it’s likely that we have the former here."

Good to see. I've mentioned it previously, but I do believe a mild hybrid could have great benefits as an overland/expedition vehicle due to the extra on board electrical capacity built in. Because a mild hybrid doesn't rely on the batteries to propel the vehicle, they are really just an assist, it doesn't matter if they were to be run down powering a fridge, lights and winch etc. I think some other mild hybrids use 48v system that is separate to the cars normal 12v electrical components, so they could either use a transformer for 12v accessories or even allow the usual of special 48v ones. A 48v winch could be pretty handy.

If Land Rover are clever, they will find a way of allowing accessories to access that power reserve. I'm not expecting the new Defender to offer these features, but it's a nice dream. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

No in Africa man, not in Africa.

But look at the missing camo behind the front wheel.

It may be rubber.

Then again that vehicle clearly has a winch fitted, and the bar could be considered part of the winch mount and therefore I believe legal, though possibly uninsurable.

Has anyone else spotted the Warn winch behind that bull bar?

- Yes you have - I should read the whole thread!

From the photo with the missing trim you can see where the door goes to now, also what looks like deployable electric side steps which will cost a fortune to replace when they either get ripped off or rot off! Ray

Saw this one going down the A483 towards Wrexham. Badged up as a bosch test vechicle.

Panel fit was very poor and obviously temporary, had white covers over the headlights, and looked to be the swb version. Also noticed it has a large tablet display screen fixed to the dash. Managed to catch it on the dash cam too 1999 300TDI 110 CSW BMW 3.0

Bought a bike off eBay for my son last evening. Chap was wearing JLR gear and was from the factory. Chatted at length re the Defender. He listened to my history and love of the original. He said without the covers it doesn’t look like a Defender. It just looks like a D4! 1951 80" S1 2.0

The D3/D4 is a nice boxy shape, I had a D3 for 8 years, it was the most practical vehicle I had ever owned and superb off road. I don’t think I would be too disappointed if the new Defender resembles a D3/4 and had the same capabilities.

That’s a good thing then for two reasons. One, there never has been anything wrong with the looks or capability of a D4, so the new “Defender” is likely also going to be a great truck which probably will sell well, and two, it means that our cubes will continue to stand out as the real legendary Land Rovers, and won’t be succeeded by a modern lookalike like a new Mini, Beetle, etc. Perfect Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
