I've been weighing up the X5:Defender for a while too. Objectively, the X5 would almost certainly win the 'best car' competition. Reliability, quality, comfort, driving dynamics, technology, speed, economy, safety, it'll do a grassy lane or campsite when you need it to, and you can pack a few dogs in the back as required. It's so good this should be a no brainer.. The defender is clearly compromised in many aspects, less budget for R&D, more glitches and quirks, it won't be as well behaved on the road, and that tailgate can be quite annoying from time to time.. of course, it'll drive over a mountain if you need it to - but if the X5 is in the running, those occasions are likely rare. So again, the decision should be a no brainer.. But if you're on this forum and weighing up a compromised 'British' car, against one of the best cars on the market, then I think this decision is not about brains alone. Emotions are likely in play - and that changes the narrative considerably. Perhaps an aspect we often don't think about, is whether the decision and willingness to compromise is entirely yours. Will it be just you driving it, or do you also need to consider the brains and emotions of someone else? |

You can’t compare most BMWs to the defender etc, they just aren’t compatible and hen you do.
It’s great to have new people into the brand, but with that becomes difficulties with expectations and understanding of what product fits where. Defender v certain jeeps or the g wagon is far more accurate Mike |

Had two X5 previously when I left Landrover after a pretty poor D2 experience. Hated both due to their suspension (stupidly hard) and appetite for tyres due to the negative camber the Msports run on the rear.
Apart from that I couldnt fault them (apart from the theft aspect). The last one did have an transfer box issue which BMW covered under good will. My heart says Defender, my head say X5. I had an TD5 90XS and a V8 D3 (best car ever!) and I was hoping that the P400 ticked both boxes. I would like the V8 but cant justify the additional outlay. Defender all day long for me, even with its issues. But then I’m one of those rare owners that would rather push a Land Rover than drive anything else. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Same here, had numerous over the years and not without issues but just part of the ownership experience. Had some amazing adventures and always found fellow owners very friendly and helpful. One of the most memorable was Iceland in 2016 in my old 110 td5 hardtop, so regret parting with this one.

I think about 50% of drivers already don't like using their indicators ,
