As above Defenders like to rot, so any rust proofing you can do is well worth it, see https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic10467.html .

Later down the road you should also consider sound insulation and most importantly security!

Good luck! Exciting!! James

I'm not sure yet, that will be the first job when it's stripped. I'd really like to keep the original, clean it, galvanise it and then treat it to a coat of EM121.

The impact was enought to shear the half shaft, so I'll be a little suprised if it's OK.

Check the OS radius arm mount, I had one similar - big impact to the front wheel. It had bent the radius arm chassis mount, radius arm, axle casing and smashed the swivel housing. 1989 90 4.3 V8

I'd be tempted to remove the bulkhead first, removing as few brackets etc. as possible, then lift the engine and transfer/gearbox out as a single lump.

I've done it in reverse before on earlier models but it's a faff. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

questions

1. Can the aluminium tub be repaired, there are some areas of galvanic corrosion, where steel meets the tub at the bottom corners, (where the tub meets the front doors) and behind the brackets that have the fixings for the inertia reels.

2. As I'm (hopefully if I can find a loom) upgrading to an XS spec loom (Electric windows, heated screen and seats, ABS, TC and AC) I'd like to try and install ABS, I got the controller sorted through Martin at Futurenet, and I think the front axle looks like it can be modified, I'm not sure about the rear axle. Any pointers or advice apperciated.

3. If anyone knows of any XS's being broken I'd be interested to know or ABS rear axles (several on eBay at £660, seems high?????)

My observation, as it's my first LR experience, is that I'm suprised how much corrosion there is in the brackets and the fixings at least 20% of the fixings were so badly corroded they had to be cut or drilled out or just broke. I can't begin to imagine what this would have been like in another 5-10 years.

A few more random pics

Just keep pulling it apart. looking at the photos your either going to refurbing lots and lots of components or buying new. cost/time etc. I would definately get friendly with YRM parts lol, they will be your friend for shiny new galv bracketry.

Suffice to say i've spent more than i care to mention with them! The stuff they sell is great and i've not had anything duff from them. Mine is either galved or stainless throughout, like literally everywhere I reasonably could.

Mike, that looks great.

Having seen the ammount of galvanic corrosion, when you use stainless are you attempting to isolate the contact between the two metals.
