There are adapter kits to suit.

Common with a range of petrol and diesels including M57. Yes the D3 also used an S6-53 variant. 1989 90 4.3 V8

When I was having this dilemma a god many years ago, I recall chatting with John Eales about building an engine for me (he lives/works just down the road from me).

His opinion was "300bhp from a RV8 is easy, 325bhp is do-able but if you want 350bhp, well that's expensive" Bow down

I think in reality, if you want 300bhp from a 4.6, you need efi or a stroker kit to make 4.8 Richard

The BMW ZF manual boxes are fairly common in the high powered RWD car world - as said they are cheap and easy to get, and can take massive amounts of power...

I suppose really it boils down to how much you want to spend, and how much faffing around you want to do to get everything to run...

There's a few options, and I've considered pretty much all of these at some point:

Rover V8 - probably the easiest option as everything is available to make it fit off the shelf. Plenty of engine selection as there's a lot of scrap P38s kicking about, and even a totally rebuilt engine is 'only' going to be about £4K. Will get you to about 250BHP, which in a 110 means you can keep up with traffic, but you aren't going to be beating golf GTIs away from the traffic lights.

Toyota *UZFE - Quite a few of these about in old LS400s and the like so can be had fairly cheaply. Most are autos, but kits are available to mate to a LR manual gearbox, or from what I remember if you can find a manual Toyota box (good luck!) there's LT230 adaptors. With aftermarket engine management and the emissions stuff removed should be good for 300HP and will last forever, and plenty of options for forced induction if you want big power. Standard drivetrain would probably cope, just.

Jag/RR v8s - 4.2SC / 4.4 / 5.0SC - not that many of these about, and you are going to be looking at a lot of complexity in terms of engine management. Majority of these were auto, so finding a manual box is going to be harder, and then you also need to put the transfer box on. ~300-500HP. Pretty much all of the drivetrain is going to need upgrading to cope.

LS - Pretty rare in the UK, and expensive to import, unfortunately not like in the US where they are available in every scrap yard. If you want a manual you are going to have to pay a fair bit for the matching box, or lots of faff with bellhousing adaptors to mate to an available box, and then shift linkages etc to make the gear lever come out in the right place. Pretty much everything is going to need to be upgraded to cope with the power. Expect big bills..
Twisted quote 0-60 in 5.8s for their LS3 90. That's quick for a defender, but it's only about the same as a modern golf GTI.

I agree that horsepower quotes are best taken off the dynamo and not by 'guessing'. In comparison my (John Eales Dev) build 5.2 stage 2 heads on 14CUX makes 268bhp (on the flywheel) but has pretty much full torque right away. My 6.2 L98 with different inlet, fuelrails and MAP setup 'only' 240kw on the wheels. m

I think anything you do Paul will be great, as long as you enjoy it. I gave up posting about my installs on other groups as the sheer amount experts suggesting i was using the wrong this and that. Then when i contacted them about for example the LT1 it was more expensive and lots of unknowns which just equals £££. Forget about 0-60 times, you get more fun opening the bonnet in a car park when someone asks what engine is in it Very Happy Andy

You’re better sourcing a used one from the US, for very obvious reasons. An LT4 is the transverse version; you can easily make big gains on the cheaper, lower-spec truck engines if that’s what you’re looking for.

My driver is simplicity, I’m not in a position to make or manufacture parts so I'm looking for a complete end to end solution that just drops in (or includes the parts to drop it in, mounts etc etc...), and fits keeping the same final drive chain incl the LT230. The Engine, gearbox is a complete package and comes complete with all bell housings, clutches (or torque converters), electronics etc etc and finally that it has seamless interface to the stock Puma dash.

I also except that everything will need to be uprated to handle the new configuration

I'm still early days for the research but I believe the LS3 package has all the above.

I'd be interested to know if there are other packages that are available to meet the above as I've not found any as yet.

I'm not interested in second hand engines/gearboxes and I have a very healthy budget. The only caveat with the LS3 with manual box, there is still a bit of work to do mating the T56 with the LT230, (that’s if I don’t opt for the auto) have spoken to Syncro and they say they will be happy to do this for me.

I have genuinely looked at the various suggested options and am totally befuddled how I’d get them all together.

Finally made some space and got the Puma into the workshop to start the strip down.

There is only so much planning you can do and the above is pretty much what I'm doing except I've changed from Ap brakes, found Futuranet to do the electronics, Excess4x4,Rakeway and Winchester gears (drivetrain) and I think I'm pretty much sorted for all the larger items.

I'm expecting the engine and gearbox to arrive during Feb and perhaps I'll have the Puma stripped by then.

Not knowing the Defender and as it is going to be totally stripped is there any "whilst your there" sort of jobs that I should do. (uprate this, replace that etc etc..)

I'm also looking for an XS bulkhead loom if anyone knows of one for sale.

If anyone is interested in any parts I'm not going to reuse (Gearbox, engine..) please let me know as I'm very tight for space and could do with getting rid of items that are not going to be reused as quick as possible.

I've got a bit of an issue with the photos on my phone right now but as soon as I get that sorted I'll post up some photos.

The whilst your in there jobs would likely be to get as much hot dip galvd and/or painted as you can. No point sticking all those shiny bits onto a rusty chassis. Thumbs Up
