2005 Td5; water cooling fan starts running immediately engine is turned on from cold. Is this normal?
I thought it only starts running when the water heats up.

I’d be going single piece and be done with all the 2 piece issues, personally.

I did toy with the idea of a pair of those, but I've now already spent £300 + on the shafts and flanges so am stuck ...

Have you got the right drive flanges as the early ones where thicker and the later Tdi onwards are thinner

Bought my Defender with 180,000 on it all ran fine until recently @ 235,000 miles.
Just had new gearbox, transfer box, clutch, flywheel & associated parts.
