Cooling fan
2005 Td5; water cooling fan starts running immediately engine is turned on from cold. Is this normal?
I thought it only starts running when the water heats up.

The fan will spin but the difference is if the fan clutch is locked in or not.

As long as it then stops running before it does warm up, this is a characteristic of a viscous fan. I think, and could be wrong, it might be all the fluid falling to the bottom of the chamber and blocking the vanes thus locking the fan “on” as if it were warm.

Should go away quite quickly once the fan has rotated and redistributed the fluid again until such a time as it’s heated up and the fan locks as it should, if it’s just on all the time then you’ve got an issue

Roll up a news paper tight as possible.

Introduce it to the fan when cold. If the fan stops happy days. If not then probably needs a new fan.
