I've not done it in situ. I imagine it could be done, but you would probably wish you didn't!

The diff comes out through the front once you remove the front output housing but it won't come until you pull the intermediary shaft and drop the intermediary gears.

If the clutch is being done then the diff could be checked once the transfer box is off? > 110 XS Double Cab

It would be almost impossible to shim up the preload on the diff/output shaft bearings correctly with the box in the vehicle, and I would only really suggest that removing and refitting the diff in situ as an emergency bush repair.

It really isn't difficult or time-consuming to take the transfer box off the vehicle, and it is far more sensible to do this than struggle with it in place.

Hi al - just to close this out.

I had a clutchfix kit fitted along with the 2.2-spec concentric release bearing and the ashcroft output shaft. Result was that it drive like a standard vehicle though with notably less spring noise. Plus I’m now know it’s done and that it will last me for many thousands of miles.

The big change was the rear halfshafts: had the 2-piece design (which was very worn) replaces with britpart 1-piece shafts and it has dramatically improved the drive. I had a significant driveline ‘thunk’ which has now gone away completely.

Very happy with all the works and thanks again for your help.
