I love language like “dialed in” because I can retroactively claim that it means anything!

What I really meant was that Jeep has really forecasted the current market and is building trucks to suit that market - today. There has been pent up demand for a Jeep pickup for years and it took a generational model change to support the strategy of building one.

LR waited too long to take serious action on modernizing the Defender and then played it safe with yet another variant in an already very homogeneous line-up - basically another version of a alloy unibody vehicle that they know how to build.. If they chose to compete in Jeep’s market then they have to make up for years of non-investment in the body-on-frame, solid axle, coil sprung design. Even Toyota treats that as a niche market.

Moreover, the US has substantial barriers to entry for non-US pickups in the form of the chicken tax.

According today’s Autocar mag 130 will” share its wheelbase with 110 to avoid costly platform extension required, Land Rover is set to extend the cars rear overhang to allow it to offer up to 8 seats” “ Land Rover ....... but it is described internally as ‘ the premium explorer of the range and aimed at large active families who like to travel. The 130 will increase the (sic) upper Defender’s price point , fitting in with Land Rover’s desire to establish the 4x4 in the high end, high margin off roader segment alongside models such as the Mercedes-Benz G Class.” Also they state that there will be no pick-up model now due to the costs of developement not being viable. It appears from the article that van versions are no problem and will be more of a market for LR. Autocar reckons that a 130 would have an extra 340mm of rear overhang over the 110 to accommodate the extra rear seat ( no mention of luggage space though!
So it looks like a 130 buyer will need as deep a pocket as an L405 Range Rover buyer.............. and also the item states that it is now unlikely that there will be a BEV version of New Defender, there even seems to some doubt that there will a PHEV version now......... Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

So it's possibly looking like the new Defender is hitting the same issue of no funds for development that the old one suffered with on a perennial basis. It's only not viable due to the current issues at JLR and the revised investment decision tree that means if spend can be stopped then it basically is.

All very disappointing.

The no BEV was hinted at with previous slides issued by JLR, but does run counter to previous statements about all models moving to MLA platform. If plans have had to be reversed or mothballed due to financial constraints; then hopefully, a turnaround in the financial may mean they are resurrected.

Had a message today from a friend who was passing Eastnor and he saw a new Defender prototype but in pickup form like a Landcruiser 80............... Whistle Thumbs Up

It doesn't reflect well on JLR if they make announcements that they doing things, I'm talking about pickups and BEV, reverse both decisions, and now appear to have done a second 180° on both, with them being back on again.

The big seller in the 'Ute' market is the Crewcab.... Mainly so the family can fit in it at the weekend.... If they are only going to build a two seat two door... then it's going to be a very niche seller.... Mainly for those with deep pockets and a 'look at me' attitude.... Sadly another opportunity missed.....
However, It does ask the question that maybe LR have backed themselves into a corner and are now struggling to get the unitary body to carry enough payload to qualify as a commercial.... Hence the 'delay' on the commercial versions of the Defender.... Which explains why there really isn't one.....
Yes they say the 'commercial' version will be along shortly... However, As soon as you mention VAT qualifying 1 ton load... It all goes very quiet and the subject is changed rather rapidly.....
There will be a 'Commercial' version.... But it appears that it won't be available as something that can be used as a business tool..

This is the Crux of the issue... Sticking a "commercial' tag in the title... DOES NOT MAKE IT A TRUE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE....
As far as I'm aware... Please correct me if I'm wrong as information is very scarce at the moment... None of the current or proposed LR products have a 1 ton capacity with the ability to carry 4/5 People...
Another trap for young players is if your towing your maximum weight 3.5 tones in the Discovery's case... you need to be careful of gross weight... so two people with maximum vehicle load... you may find yourself over the max permitted gross weight...

Double-cab pickups are particularly attractive for these purposes, as they have two rows of seats and four doors, making them as useful for carrying people as a regular car. However, to qualify as an LCV, a double-cab pickup must have a payload capacity of over 1,000kg.

If it doesn't, it counts as a car for some tax purposes. An example of this would be the Ford Ranger Raptor, which meets the rules for flat-rate van VED (N1 type approval) but counts as a car for BIK - which means a monthly bill of £598.89 for 40% rate payers at current levels. Ouch.

What's more, you wouldn't be able to claim the VAT back on a Raptor, and you'd also face fuel benefit charges at the higher car rate as well. A triple whammy. It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

Love it! So the new defender Commercial is aimed at quantity surveyors, photographers and artists!! Jeez, I’m not sure they could have picked a more opposite demographic to what the old utilities were aimed at! All those people saying that it will never take on the Japanese pick up market are spot on, but judging by this ad, JLR have zero interest in being in that market.

Is it really so difficult to understand? As I see it, the european commercial market mainly demands vans these days, not pickups, this is a niche. ROW otoh is owned by japanese and to a lesser degree american trucks. There is no way JLR can compete there (anymore). The only market that remains is luxury/leisure vehicles. Hence the New Defender as it is... sad but true!

I was at Eastnor Castle December 2018 and the Land Rover Experience team was training a team from a Middle Eastern country on how to drive Land Cruisers off road.

It might be them that your friend saw....
