United Kingdom 2006 Defender 90 Td5 SW Zambezi Silver
Those criteria are all met with the aforementioned Disco Sport.
The bit that achieves proper 4x4 (rather than SUV) capability - 3500kg towing, adjustable suspension, large wheel travel, snatch recovery loads, separate transfer box etc etc very much depend on which way round the engine goes. Customers don't care which way it is, but if the customer expectations demand the above features, that drives the architecture choice.

Too a degree but the DS is just so bland, my Skoda Ovtavia VRS 4x4 is way better to drive and has better tech fitted. The DS just doesn't feel like a 'Land Rover', hard to define what that is but there is something missing for sure. Andy

North/South engine orientation, Aluminium architecture and utterly impressive off-road capability - I’m in and actually interested in how to chop the D5 in against an early-stage Defender.

There will always be the haters - but bear in mind new Mini is vastly different to original Mini, an Audi A4 is a million miles from a 1980’s Quattro and we need to understand that it’s a case of evolution rather than revolution! Likewise, there were the nay-sayers that decried the change from 300 Tdi to TD5 and then again to Puma, Discovery 2 to 3 and so on...

New Defender will be a superb bit of kit...!

Oh... and as for those who decry the ‘reliability’, I would suggest the later models have a better reliability record than some earlier models...

I must admit I do fancy one but I'm not prepared to stump up the £5k deposit Pentland wanted for a build slot on a vehicle with no announced launch date, spec or pricing!! 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Have you taken a DS off road. Take it up and down 45 degree slopes etc. I’m the first to admit I was a pessimist until I tried ours out.

Wow you launch it at a gradient the Defender needs some momentum to get up and it just goes and goes. Drop it off the top of a steep slippery one and it’s unnatural how the engine torque and auto acceleration in bursts to stop you skidding. The suspension travel also amazed me, with wheels off the ground it’s a gutsy little thing. The electronics and the way they control and manipulate the drive train is bloody impressive.

Yes ground clearance is not as good but in all but the roughest stuff and slippery conditions with its launch controls I’d now choose it over the Defender. Just don’t tell the wife I took it off road Laughing

Doesn't sound good. They need to get build quality top notch. Presumably, mostly robot assembled? James

Didn't LR have QC issues with the workforce at the factory in China resulting in numerous recalls - does not bode well..

No Land Rover factories have been capable of producing reliable vehicles, whether UK, Brazil or China. To me that suggests poor design is the main issue not any particular workforce.

Saying that, I know of an owner who took his 70th to an indy to sort out because it was put together badly.

I would never put a deposit down for anything for which I do not have 100% info.
I wouldn't be keen to get one of the early builds either, I'd prefer to wait to wait several months, maybe even a year, until they've got the production process sorted.
These views don't only apply to Defender, but to anything I was contemplating purchasing.
Pickles.

Deposit is fully refundable so there is really nothing to lose, once the prices are released and the specifications et cetera I can then decide whether to go ahead and place a firm order or not.

There is something quite exciting about being one of the first owners of a new product as I experienced with the D3 Andy

Went to my local dealer just outside Sunderland, to ask about deposit for build slot and was told no such thing existed Big Cry
Thought i was daft when i asked and they didnt even know about a potential new defender which i was amazed at.
So does this build slot deposit actually exist
