TD5 Driver Demand
Picked up a base for a new project 2004/5 Bog spec 90 Td5, Very clean, well maintained

First Issue

On the drive home, after 20 miles, engine dies and mil light on,, only got tick over, no throttle response, so recovery job home Shocked

All test's and system scans point to the throttle unit,, so new genuine one ordered

Spoke to vendor, and it would seam, he has the same issue, back in August, and also fitted a new gen unit, 90's now done about 900 miles since

Fitted new unit today, and now have throttle response, BUT, a bad flat spot/hesantance , which struggles to drive through, even with light or heavy throttle load ? which was not there on the first 20 mile on old unit
Fitted the old (August ?) unit, and its back to driver demand fault, no throttle response

So ideas ?? Modul plug ? Loom, back to ECU ?

It due out tomorrow night, as recovery for the Exeter Trail !! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Could be a break in the throttle cable (sorry... "driver demand") cable.

If you've got a nanocom (and I assume other devices read the same data) there are 2 or 3 signal wires coming off of the pedal (Depending on it's age... early ones were 2 track, later 3 track), the nanocom should read the voltage off of them... 0-5v on one, 5-0v on the other (depending on where the pedal is in its range of movement..ie, foot OFF the pedal... tickover... one track will show 0v, other will show 5v (And on the 3 track system, I'm not sure what the 3rd one shows, between 0 and 5v but I don;t know which way)).. the ECU then sorts it out and gives a relative throttle position for the engine.

anyway.... maybe one of these are duff? on a separate note... wifes suzuki vitara, 2.0D from 2003... had a similar thing; had 3 or 4 complete pedal assy's changed over the years until I kicked up a fuss at the dealers, and suddenly a "repair" harness appeared from Japan. apparently there was a break/fault/Geishi doll stuck in the vehicle wiring harness causing the fault.

Could be a break in the Td5 loom (or a Brummie eating a pasty)...

Oil in the ECU, wiring loom?
I am guessing the injector harness has been replaced. Is there any oil showing at the ECU red plug?

Loom from pedal to ECU. I’ve done a few of them.

Check for oil in ecu plug and unplug the MAF and drive around to see if the power comes back. Ray

Thanks all Very Happy

I am thinking loom, the "flat spot/hesantance" is about one third throttle , so am suspecting that wire ? will check them all back to the ECU for continuity tomorrow morning

Not sure why, the unit fitted in August failed ?? it certainly does not work, or give the figures you quote Jamie !!

Symptoms aren't the "oil on injector loom" lighting . all Driver Demands , plus the odd AC, and Tacho drive ! but i did check the loom into ECU for oil, as i sat beside the road, Shocked as first thought !!

I presume you just make up a new loom Andy ? 7 core trailer cable ? California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Yes. Just used trailer wire as you say. Not a bad job to do, as long as you can keep warm enough to feel your fingers.

As before, I wouldn't bother looking for wire break, just replace all with multi core wire. Now have backup for tomorrow so soft top available, home 1900, ring if require it. Cheers

I would change the Crank Sensor (genuine only) and the MAP sensor (gen only). Both can cause the issues you describe. Just because the throttle input seems off doesnt always mean it is the thottle itself. Instagram @defender_ventures

Well, Fingers crossed sorted

Replaced pedal socket and loom,, all good to go now,,
Question is ? why 2 pedals in 6 months , the August one certainly does not work, have the feeling the loom may have been the problem back then ?
But would the loom "burn" out the august unit ? As it was fitted by previous owner ? can only speculate

Thanks for the input guys California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

I can only assume that the damaged loom puts electrical spike, or voltage the wrong way into the pedal potentiometer.

They can be a long on going problem, one I fixed was a problem over a year and initially only occurred when puddles had been driven through.

Bloody quick work done there. Well done, which I could get my arse in gear to sort my Defender out.

Buying the plug must make it a bit easier and save a bit of time. Will remember that for next time. I’ve always cut the loom at both ends and reused plug and 6” of loom. Much prefer your method.
