WTF has an axle replacement got to do with air box mod?
Whilst we're on the subject of air I have discovered the latest 'must have' for Caterham. It also doubles up as a constant reminder how rubbish his Defender appears to have been, or not as the case may be. ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! ![]() oh...got me now....should I shouldn't I respond?....? ah well I've used the ![]() clutch to be replaced and someone hinted at possibly getting a replacement axle.....(will have to keep my fingers crossed and wait and see).... reason for this being suggested was the fact it's due to have the bolt on support brackets from LR recall, suspicion over the CV, drive shafts / flanges and diff. - won't know anymore until it's stripped other than to say things don't seem right (clearly the flanges are worn / loose but that's no major shakes), it's the klonking sound which seems to be coming from the CV's / half shafts?) |

you're telling me !
had it up in the air - looked at splines on shaft / drive flange and saw wear / play. after removing C clip and moving shaft in / out was making rather loud knocking, also while up in the air and moving wheel from full left to full right lock there was also what seemed like excessive knocking ![]() hopefully it'll all be fine and nothing more than new clutch, drive flanges and axle recall support brackets but I'm not holding my breath. (I'm going to mention this on the other thread but how do you know if you have a 4 or 2 pin front diff on the build schedule?) once again ![]() |

![]() If you remove the C clip then push and pull the shafts in and out they and the gubbins attached to them are going to knock and clunk. Steve. I'm sure you are right but I believe the surprise was more to do with how much they did....
and as mentioned we may find all is ok (hence won't know until we've stripped it) but there's definitely concern and I think we'll all agreed that pushing pulling the wheel / tyre when it's on the ground shouldn't generate a clonking noise? and again..... ![]() |

Oh man it just never ends with you! Other than slack hub bearings and possibly swivel pins on the front I can't see what's going to clonk in the transmission by pulling the wheels in and out at the 12 o'clock position while all four wheels are on the ground and taking the weight of the vehicle. Pushing and pulling the vehicle back and forth with the transmission brake applied is going to result in noises as the backlash is taken up and released but yanking the wheels in and out?
Stand the vehicle on a flat level surface, chock the wheels, handbrake off and do the wheel shaking routine while someone videos it and then post the results here. BTW Are you paying an on the scene expert who's advising you with all this? Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Not paying....not yet anyway.
Will see if I can sort a video but will need to get some help...I mean i'll need to get someone to do the video thing. Leave it with me. Just a thought, if we're the swivel pins wouldn't this also be obvious when the wheels are in the air? Also don't imagine this would impact on gear changes? |

Yes worn swivel pins would be discernible with the wheels in the air checking play as per wheel bearings at the 12 & 6 o'clock positions, but worn pins would not be the norm with a relatively newish vehicle with reasonable road miles such as yours. Steve.
