What have people done to seal the two little holes that are exposed when the separator is removed ?

Gaffer tape.
Short term solution, might have to come up with something more permanent. |

Here's the view from above:

i don't get this?
surely theres no way that the plastic is more of a resistance to the air flow than the air filter itself? or do you remove the air filter too? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I would be worried about the filter getting damp/wet after removal of the fan separator , your get a lot more restriction from a damp/wet filter
as said before ive seen filters sucked up towards the engine intake because filters have got damp no leave filter in , there not a bad restriction |

Out of interest does anyone know what this refers to:
![]() Click image to enlarge is it the cyclone? It's moulded into the inside of the the air box lid: ![]() Click image to enlarge |

If moisture on the filter was a problem - then surely every car that doesn't have a cyclone would have a problem ? And loads of cars don't have them.

Not at all....Not everyones filter intake is on the exposed outside of a vehicle behind the front wheels though.

maybe the defender during testing did have a problem due to where the intake is
maybe its in case of if a lot of water went down intake may help prevent to much getting to engine maybe its for heavy rain very hard to say without testing but a damp/wet filter will restrict air flow , like said I have seen it many times on all makes and even seen where the rubber seal has pulled out of the groove round the airbox allowing air passed the filter the cyclone is there for a reason , you can see the marks on them in some the pics where the flow of air has left tracks on the blades |

That's a fair point k9F - although I never remember it being an issue for any of the unfaired motorcycles I rode.
The received wisdom being that the water atomised with the air and passed through the the filter. I guess I haven't made my mind up yet and not heard anything that has really convinced me. |

I've done the airbox mod, no problems at all. There is a drain hole in the bottom anyway.
Moist air will get through regardless and rain it's self cannot get there without hitting the sides and if much does get in it'll acumulate and out the drain hole. If you had a Snorkel and blocked up the drain hole too it might be an issue though but there is a rain separator built into those too. It allows more air in quicker with out being a resistance in the system. Saying it's there for a reason is not always true in every case. LR don't have tuning as standard and it's better. The standard exhaust has a hefty centre silencer but with out is better. Then there are EGR's etc which are better shut off The intake being on the side has no air ram effect so nothing can be driven in there as you don't drive sideways. ![]() ![]() Dust is much more of an enemy and most certainly you don't want to run with out a filter in. Loads of rubbish gets in the bottom the airbox of which if it wasn't for the filer it'd be straight in. |

Steve - what did you do with the holes exposed when you removed it ?

No - the little holes that are exposed part way around the circumference of where the hydro clone locates.
I don't have any pics to hand Im afraid. |
