The New Defender will make money. It’s the Discovery that should concerned.

I agree with J77, it’s the car Disco 3 and Disco4 owners are queuing up to buy because Disco 5 is either too luxurious, too expensive or not suitable to replace their now aging Classic Defenders, Disco3’s and Disco4’s with. I actually see quite a few Disco5’’s hauling big livestock trailers to the auction marts in Stirling , but it’s only because the dealers are selling pre-registered vehicles with 20-30% discounts for having 10 miles on the odo. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I completely agree. I was absolutely gobsmacked when they launched the new Defender without even a proper Hybrid version right from the start, and in my opinion they should definitely have also included a full electric version. They can't say they hadn't developed the technology yet when the already have the well received Jaguar I Pace!
That to me was a terrible mistake. I for one would not pay in excess of £50K for a diesel or petrol vehicle without it being a full Hybrid. As come selling it time in another 3 or 5 years no one will go near it.

It goes to show how out of touch either the designer and / or the management are.

I thought at very least it would have mild hybrid across the range like Disco Sport and Evoque.

Out of the entire Land Rover (not Range Rover ) lineup I think the defender has the biggest chance of making decent sales. The d5 is a total let down from a design and packaging perspective and I think the 90 has a cool factor over the DS, the defender will attract a lot of D4 owners currently living on extended warranties when they would have normally swapped by now. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Not to be a scaremonger, but If I had paid a deposit for a new Defender I would be thinking very seriously at this point in getting my money back.

It isn't just the uncertainty over JLR's future, but what happens to much of the dealer network if the supply of new vehicles and parts drops off a cliff?

Are deposits ring fenced in an escrow type account, or are they being held by the dealers in their general trading accounts?
If a dealer folds with a cash deficit, do those who have paid their deposits sit in the unsecured creditors queue along with everyone else in the same boat?

And even if I got my new Defender, what sort of back up and warranty support could I expect when things go wrong, if the supporting infrastructure has collapsed?

I do see parallels with SAAB and MG/Rover as others have mentioned earlier.

Sorry if I am sounding alarmist, but I am really worried about the sustainability of many weak businesses once we exit from the current Covid situation.

To make matters worse, MG was purchased by the Chinese Big Cry

Problem for LR is they don't actually make the I-Pace... its a bought in product... So they have no IP... Hence no BEV or PHEV... It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

I know they farmed out manufacturer was it designed externally? i thought JLR designed the powertrain including the motor and used their formula e divisions IP for some of it? Damn shame if they don't own the IP over the design. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Not sure that's correct. It is assembled overseas, but as far as IP and such matters is concerned:

* It was designed in house
* The chassis is a variant of the JLR D7
* Electric motors were developed in house
* Battery management system is a JLR product

I'm not certain but thought the batteries were actually assembled in the UK also ~ the battery cells come from LG Chem but the 90 kWh battery itself was developed at JLR.
