Well, current rules haven't worked, so Melbourne is now under very severe "Stage 4" Lockdown.
Basically only essential services working, businesses shut down, schools shut down, only allowed out of house for one hour a day for exercise, can't travel more than 5ks from homes, and plenty more of the same. So, we're basically confined to our home, for six weeks. The Victorian Labor Govt created the current problem through their total gross mismanagement of quarantine, but the situation since, has been exacerbated by stupid,selfish Bogans who refuse to obey the "rules". Not good Pickles
I had a drive around the North Norfolk Coast on Sunday. Wells next the Sea was heaving. There are two chip shops on the front (both very good as it happens) and a small sea defence wall between the road and the Quay. It was packed! There was no social distancing. People were crowding past each other on pavements and sitting on every spare inch of the sea wall. I know it’s Norfolk, but they can’t all be related 
People are holidaying on the UK coast as they may be uneasy about flying abroad, and this is doing wonders for the coastal economy, but it appears that their common sense is left behind on vacation. The statistics on the news last night are very positive in the UK and this might be what people are judging their behaviour on? |

Hopefully we older people are sensible.
Because out of the blue I was offered an "anti-pneumonia" jab by my local Health Centre. It's a once-in-a-lifetime jab, so I had it this morning. Never heard of it before. I don't like jabs and have never even had a flu jab, despite being eligible for some time. But this year I will take every jab they offer me - no questions asked. I'll probably end up with more holes in my arm than a junkie! But who wants flu, pneumonia and Covid-19 all at the same time this Winter?  |

I suppose a bad flu strain this winter as well as a re-occurrence of Covid is the worst possible scenario.
I have had my Pneumonia Jab about 6 years ago and always have a flu jab every year. Many people have stated that they get flu after having the jab. These people probably have never had flu or were the ones that came back to work two days after 'having the flu'  We know who you are  Same people who went to their Grandfathers funeral nine times.
If you get offered the flu jab, take it. The worst I have ever had has been a numb arm for a few hours. A small price to pay and if you ever have had full blown flu, you will know why I have the jab. Sadly, the jab is only a best case guess at what may be the prevalent strain over the winter and it doesn't stop you getting it. I just think any help is better than no help? |

Yes, I couldn't quite work out what Boris was saying recently,...He was talking about "opening things up", but I was wondering how that was possible when infections & deaths are still happening. Pickles. |

It’s a balancing act, Pickles, between keeping everything isolated and giving the economy a helping hand.
There is no easy answer. People will not do as they are told. It’s human nature to rebel and some rebel more than others. There is a distinct amount of non-believers, those that think it’s all a conspiracy and Boris never had Covid and JFK and Princess Diana’s deaths were faked. I kid you not, that was exactly what my wife over heard in the supermarket this week from two people chatting and who weren’t wearing masks (risking a fine) in Sainsbury’s. I am pretty despondent about the next few months coming up and I don’t mind admitting it. I hope it will just naturally disappear but I fear it won’t and we are likely to get a second wave. A lot of the queues are control measures are manageable when it’s Summer. Not sure what it will be like in the winter when it’s lashing it down? No one knows what will happen so all we can do is sit tight, do what we feel to be correct and play the waiting game. I hope things improve for you Pickles. |

Well,
Not good to hear that the things are getting worse in Melbourne 
The things are improved a little bit down here (we move from 8,000 infected per day at the middle of june to less than 1,500 at country level now). After more than 3 months of total lockdown in Santiago and other big cities, some areas (mine included) have leave the complete lockdown stage to a transition stage. That means that we can go out during the day but only inside the areas in transition stage (during night and weekends lockdown are still in force). We cannot move to our holidays houses and meetings with more than 5 peoples indoors or 10 outdoors are not allowed. Schools and universities have remote classes probably during all 2020. All cafes, restaurants, gyms, stadiums, cinemas, theatres, museums and concerts halls are shut down. Mask and social distance are mandatory. So trying to back to the normality but far far away from what we consider normal in 2019. BTW: I receive as a present a nice New Defender... (Lego version) So probably several hours of entertaining! Eduardo & Rashers,...yes that's about where we are.
Plenty of unbelievers, and people who simply refuse to wear masks, isolate etc. Just yesterday on the media was a n example where a Policewoman asked a lady to wear a mask, & that "Lady" smashed the Policewoman's face into a concrete pole several times. There are fines etc, and I believe that unpaid fines should be deducted from welfare. There are just too many people who abuse the everyday freedoms of western democracy,...in many countries the actions of these people would see them being immediately imprisoned or indeed, shot. IMHO if we are to beat this Virus, we have to toughen up, big time. Pickles. |

Hello from Aussie "Lockdown" Melbourne, got just under a month to go,......if we are able to control the number of infections?
BUT, on the News this morning, our P.M. announced that He had done a deal with a research company connected to Oxford University, to purchase a Vaccine, which He said He hoped would be available early 2021, He said we've ordered 25m doses, and that those over 65 & the frail would get priority? So, I was wondering what you guys know about any possible vaccine, Of course Vladimir says He's already got one? Regards from Aussie, Pickles. |

Pickles, fear ye not. The Oxford development and trials (including human trials) have been on-going from the start of the epidemic and signs are very good. This is a real trial based on real science, by one of the leading labs/teams in the UK (world?) and any discussion of it can be entirely trusted. It is being undertaken jointly by Astra Zenica, one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies and I think it is also being conducted in joint trials with a handful of other leading labs worldwide. It could well be the first (reliable) vaccine that’s developed. Initial results are very positive. This is not fake news or Putin news, so if you fall into that age group, that is good news.

I think that there will be a working vaccine before too long, but it does surprise me the number of governments which have already bought millions of doses of something which doesn't actually exist yet!

I suspect they've effectively bought production capacity, probably prompted by the US decision to buy up all production of some other drug a couple of months ago, so as to be ready when something is available. Darren
