Great piece of kit, but, BEWARE!

I recently fitted one and recently had the Defender serviced at a well know Land Ranger independent Land Rover garage, and the mentally challenged mechanic Whistle (I had my doubts about him when I saw him eating a spaghetti hoop sandwich cold!).

Why BEWARE, because even though I told the mechanic about the Difflock plug and gave him the flexible pipe the moron unscrewed the Difflock from the sump as you would an ordinary sump plug to drain the oil. Rolling Eyes

I was not to pleased and even the other mechanics called him a few choice words.

I usually drain the oil myself but as it was due a full service I did not bother this time.

They are a nice bit of kit, I like mine.
With the amount people buying them, would it be worth doing a group buy?

Does anyone know which plug and size would be needed for a 2013 2.2 Puma?
Thanks in advance

On the Femco UK website ( http://www.drainplug.co.uk/ ) - there's a enquiries form (in "enquiries") - they'll spec-up the kit you need Thumbs Up

I think you need the same as me (TDCi's are all the same drain plug)?

At least then if it's wrong, they'll be duty-bound to replace it Whistle Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Ooooh, this is an old thread!

But... I've just changed the sump on my 300tdi. The old sump had a drain plug on it, like this:

It's been on the car for at least the 17 years that I've had it, possibly the whole 24 years the car's been around, and given no trouble, so I was going to refit it. Unfortunately the hole on the new sump is a larger diameter (15mm spanner) so it won't fit. I had to resort to the standard plug to get going again.

I could get another valve like that. I think they are about £25 or I could go for one of the femco/difflock ones.

On the face of it, the femco one seems more robust/less likely to get knocked if off-road. But this one is so easy to use - just slide on a short length of hose; turn the tap; watch the oil drain into the container. Very controllable.

Anyone used both and able to give any either/or experience?

With the femco/difflock ones, is it the screwing in of the hose that opens the tap?

Thanks Donald

Correct - If you really want I can wander to the shed and take a pic of the brass hose end (the bit you see in MartinK's post) 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks for that - no need to get out the camera! I also searched for 'Stahlbus' ones, similar to the femco ones, and they had a diagram showing how it worked.

Despite the fact that I've had no problems with the femoto one for so many years, the femco/difflock one does seem more robust.

Still interested in anyone's long term experience of them. Donald

Mine has been in for 8 years or so. No issues and makes changing oil much easier. Ideal if you accidentally add too much oil and need to drain some off. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have had one on my 2004 300TDi since the first (1000 mile) service, never had a moments problem with it.
Fitted one to my wife's Freelander 1 TD4 about 8-years ago, that also has been faultless.

Both used twice yearly. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

I guess that will do it for me then. I'll get one ordered and fit it at the next oil change.

Thanks both. Donald
