I am using a new flange, so its probably best to stick to the manual instruction, with the seal "just touching the bearing circlip".

I can also vouch for the X8R repair kit. I did mine 3 years ago due to a leak (coupled with a leaking rocker cover gasket = messy) and it has been perfectly fine since then.

Remember that splined shafts hate to be separated if pulled in any other way but directly in-line. The splines bind. So make sure you pull straight.

You might be lucky with this approach, but it is made much harder by the fact that you can't get the handbrake drum off with the propshaft in place.

If you have enough slack, maybe you can put a hacksaw between the prop flange and the brake drum?
