I am using a new flange, so its probably best to stick to the manual instruction, with the seal "just touching the bearing circlip".

Remember that splined shafts hate to be separated if pulled in any other way but directly in-line. The splines bind. So make sure you pull straight.

Good advice for the OP.

Also a good opportunity to adjust the gear lever bias springs to take up any play. This can make a huge difference to buzzes & rattles, & improves the gear selection ...

You might be lucky with this approach, but it is made much harder by the fact that you can't get the handbrake drum off with the propshaft in place.

If you have enough slack, maybe you can put a hacksaw between the prop flange and the brake drum?
