Engine warning light and limp mode, cleared with a restart.
Hi all,

I've had my 2000 Defender 90 TD5 for a couple of weeks now. Had a great 3 hour drive home and a several short trips out and about since. No issues until a couple of days ago when the engine warning light came on and the vehicle went into limp mode. This followed a 15 min drive in traffic and immediately after a hard right turn in a car park. I turned the vehicle off and restarted, not had it come back since.

Are here any common sources of this problem? I was reading a different thread where the pedal wiring is a common fault for the engine light and no revs, someone else had a sensor fault but none of it directly matched what I'd experienced.

TIA.

There is a good chance that the engine light/limp mode occurrence will have left a fault code in the ECU which can be checked in order to identify the fault.

The most likely would be a fault with the throttle potentiometer (pedal assembly), or its wiring loom.
I would also first be checking for oil in the injector harness, both at the cylinder head plug, & the ECU plug under the driver's seat. This would be less likely to leave a fault code though.

This sort of fault is reasonably common.

Cheers,

Lionel

i have had this with mine a few times too, just a simple engine off and one again, seems to sort it. I will have to buy a diagnostic plug in to see what the story is. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

This is classic fault of a failing MAF sensor and they do fail. just unplug it and this problem probably wont come back and its easy to check. and a good tip is to replace it with a good quality item.

Thanks for the feedback guys. All useful to bear in mind. I've read about the throttle pot' and the dealer told me he'd had a MAF sensor issue on his that was discovered during a re-map. I'll plug my ODB reader in a see what it tells me.
