When I had a similar sounding problem the issue was a corroded poor earth wire connection to the starter motor - a quick thing to check and fix, or rule out…good luck.

Depends on how loose it is.
A while back I was very lucky to undo the nut by holding the socket with a bit of force ‘at an angle’ so the rivnut got a bit of grip in the hole.

Don’t know about you but my 1988 Defender seems to be made with a clever mix of both metric and imperial fixings.
