 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Orkney Grey
Rivnut spinning advice please.
Removing the front mudflap bracket and the outer rivnut is spinning bolt still in.
I can just get in behind it but can’t get enough pressure on it to stop it spinning when trying to remove the bolt.
WD 40d overnight but I’m now thinking about grinding it off then nut and bolt the new one on as I think there’s just enough room.
Any help, advice or opinions welcome

Had the same problem with my rear mudflaps. Cut the heads off with a Dremel and pushed the remains through into crossmember. Just replaced with new rivnuts as not enough access to rear.

Yes, grinding off will be easiest. Either fit a new rivnut or nut and bolt if you can reach through to tighten it Thumbs Up don’t forget to paint or wax any missing paint and preferably under the mud flap bracket too as they can hold moisture and rot the area. Ray

Could you not use standard blind pop rivets?
Okay, you have to drill to remove but that’s easier than removing a spinning rivnut and you can bet your life that if you have any they will do exactly that.

Unless there is a specific reason why it can’t be, perhaps the holes are now very large.

Whenever I have come across rivnuts and luckily not often, they have spun out whatever you do to try and beat them.
If you have a set of four, you can bet three will come out and one won’t.

Just a note on WD40. It’s not a rust penetration spray. It’s a water displacement spray, in fact it took them 40 goes to get it correct. Hence WD40. For releasing rusted nuts , bolts etc plusGas is far better and designed for the job, it can’t perform miracles, and rivnuts / nutserts will always be problematic, but pre soaking in plusGas, then going for tightening them up to crush the rivnut as tight as you can before loosening gives you the best chance . Also as you do loosen the bolt do it in stages . ie loosen a little, then tighten, then loosen a little more, it reduces the amount of rust being pulled into the rivnut threads and eases bolt extraction. Heat is also your friend here. You have to be careful and avoid using near combustible or delicate items, but a map gas blow torch on the bolt after it’s been soaked overnight in plusGas can break the rust and help avoid the nutsert spinning. Just have a way of putting out any little fires Smile

It’s out now but still got the rear mudflap brackets to replace. Just watched a YouTube Vid, release then tighten release then tighten taking your time to push out any rust. Lesson Learned. Rolling Eyes

On the puma 110 chassis the rear mudflap chassis rivnuts can be accessed, Ive not done it but it does look like a set of 4inch locking pliers could grip the rivnut from inside the chassis section. Alternatively cutting the bolt head then punching out leave you with an option of holding a nut there with a ring spanner avoiding the need to install a new hex rivnut when replacing mudflap bracket.

I will need to replace the hex rivnuts when I change my flap brackets. Can any body tell me the size of rivinut required ? Is it M6 or bigger?
Don't want to start the job without the correct items?

Type mudflap rivnut in search box, lots of info there. Plus you will find a link to show how to construct a DIY rivnut tool as well.

Have been delving about on Google and I think they are probably M8 full hex rivnuts.
Expecting to drill out the old ones as the bolts are spinning on a couple.

Cut the bolt off flush with a grinder, punch the rivnut out, fish out the remains with a telescopic or flexi long magnet, fit new rivnut.
