1/2” ratchet set recommendations
After a lot more years than I would like to admit, my basic Halfords ratchet has given up the ghost. I’m in the market for a new quality metric and imperial socket set with 1/2” drive. Needs to come with a tray that can go into my tool chest. Budget up to £200.

What have you got?!

Allegedly the Halfrauds socket sets have a lifetime warranty?

I like Teng stuff but you can’t go wrong with Halfords professional 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

If you’ve already got a lot of the sockets and extensions etc from your old set that are still good, I’d not buy a set. Instead, spend it on a nice ratchet and say a few quality sockets and extensions you don’t already have. I just bought a Wera ratchet that feels nice. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hi Co1 my toolkit consists nearly all of Halfords Professional and Halfords Advanced they have a lifetime guarantee I have only had to use that guarantee once about 12 years ago when a stubby extension bar snapped after someone had used an air tool to do up my wheel nuts Shocked and Halfords exchanged it without a receipt no questions asked, also if you know someone with a trade card good discount can be had Thumbs Up cheers Paul

I certainly don’t have the receipt for the sockets and I think they will be 26 years old so I’ve had my money’s worth! They are also all blathered in dinitrol!

I have a teng 1/4” kit but not keen on the plastic ratchet handle.

I recently broke the ratchet in my Halfords socket set that I got for my 18th birthday more than 30 year ago Big Cry I just bought a new ratchet from Halfords. Given their current reputation and how long the original lasted, it didn't seem worth looking elsewhere. Darren

I still have and use the Britool socket set that I bought 60 years ago.
They still come up on sale and the quality is excellent. 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

The bulk of my socketry is Britool or King Dick but from the good old days when it was as good as it gets. Both makes have now become generally mundane and no longer outstanding.

This is supplemented by Snap On, Blue Point, Teng, Gedore and others.

In my opinion nowadays in terms of value for money Halfords Pro is hard to beat, being good quality at a reasonable price with a very good warranty, what's not to like?

It's more difficult (and much more expensive) if you need to go above 1/2" square drive, decent 3/4" and 1" socket sets and socketry is hard to find and massively expensive. Fortunately it isn't needed on Land-Rovers very often.

I bought these a few years back https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bahco-S240-Socket...HSHMN2AJ6R and i find them great to use!I would never buy a bigger set as you will only use a small percentage of the sockets...........perhaps we should have a sticky on the subject of common tools and sockets used in defender maintinance!

I use Halfords and Facom ( the proper stuff not the "Expert by Facom" which I think is Draper ) who also have a lifetime guarantee. Changed a Facom hacksaw when it broke without a receipt and with a dealer who I had never been to before.
