To be honest, in the final stages of putting it together, I would happily push it off a cliff!!

Just a "stupid" suggestion.

I don't suppose you or someone else stuffed a rag in an opening in the inlet system and it has been left in there?

Just thinking out the box??

As for all your assumptions, they are all correct. I assume the alarm is the green box?
