 2003 Defender 110 Td5 G4 Challenge Tangiers Orange
Yesterday as the weather was superb, I spent a bit of time cleaning/de-greasing around the FPR and even changed the cam cover gasket and front seal, both simply and cheap things to do. The FPR doesn’t appear to be leaking, the mess was coming from the old cam cover gasket which, at 63K mikes, could have been the original. I’ll see if it cures itself but realistically, I’m gearing myself up for having a nice Valeo clutch kit and DMF as I think the contamination may have been happening for a while.
As the sun was shining, and the chaps at black circles failed miserably to fit the new tyres as they couldn’t remove the wheels (I managed to at home), I tidied up the rear cross member with some buzz weld and replaced the broken light covers. Just need to source and replace that spare wheel carrier as its crusty and horrible on the inside. I was looking at the swing away ones but not sure what they offer above the type already fitted?

You can buy a new "take off" spare wheel carrier from Twisted for around £50

You shouldn't need a new DMF at 60,000 miles

Swing away will take the weight off the door and hinges and they will both last much longer. The weight is transferred to the frame.

My one started leaking like a Censored this week, it seems my new one is on back order so i rebuilt it with the X8R kit from eBay, bit of a faff but 60 miles done and it seems to be holding up, i will be keeping a very close eye on it

The O/P's Defender has the later rear door which is much stronger and able to take the weight of the wheel.
So, although they are a nice accessory there's less need for
a swing away wheel carrier.

My 110 is on 140,000 miles and the door/hinges are still perfect

Just to close the loop on this… I took it to Henshall Engineering in Chelford whom I use to maintain my G4’s and he fitted the LOF HD clutch kit with new dual mass flywheel and clutch fork. He also popped a new rear main seal in and the assist pedal spring. It’s now superb to drive but sadly I have to sell it. It’s on eBay if anyone fancies it. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.
