Thanks, Nige. That's what I had come round to after further thought. So the main selector shaft is absent from the photo, but if it was fitted the front end would protrude into the tube under the breather (on an assembled box you can see it down the breather hole. I'm beginning to understand! Thumbs Up

I'm fighting the urge to take one apart! Must look out for a cheap one.

the front 2 detents have to come out, rear 2 can be punched through later once the rails are out,

we drill the front 2 and use a slide hammer, this scraps them,

sorry just walked past another of these being stripped and I got this the wrong way round !!

the 2 rearmost ones must be removed before the rear housing is pulled off,

the 2 front ones can come out later once the rails are out, Dave

OK guys, we finally have the definitive answer to all this breather bolt stuff..

I have made a video of a complete strip down of the MT82 gearbox in the Puma Defenders. If you don't want to see the strip down jump forward to around 36 minutes and you'll see the bolt and what it's holding.
Looks like as long as you engage fourth gear and dont touch anything once the bolt is out, you "should" be OK??? Certainly, nothing will drop out.

Please like the video and subscribe to my channel where you can see a complete strip and rebuild of a Puma Defender 2.4.. yes EVERY nut and bolt, not just rust removal and painting of major assemblies.

The video should be live by 20:00 GMT 22nd June.

When I removed the breather from my spare box* and then refitted it (about a year after I removed it) it actually wasn't too difficult to refit. I have to say though that if I had seen that video before I removed it, I probably would not have done so.

If you remove the breather with the gearbox otherwise complete, is there anything to stop the semi-circular thing that the breather screws into from rotating round the selector shaft so that the thread is no longer at the top? It obviously can't fall off, but if it inverted itself I imagine it could be very difficult to get it back in place without stripping the box.

There are so many horrible "value-engineered" features on that box! And yes, some of us are listening, and agree with you!

Good work, and a great public service making that video. Thumbs Up

*Incidentally the only reason I removed it was because someone on this forum asked what the thread was. Had I known the full possible consequences, I am not at all sure I would have done so!

I'll check on reassembly for you bud. I'm sure it cant actually flip over. You could always put an 8mm bar down through the breather hole before removing the bolt. That would stop the lump from spinning. Nige
