MT82 breather
Hi everyone,

I am looking at improving the breather on my MT82 2.4 Puma.

I need to know if it is safe to remove the bolt that the pipe is pressed into please. It is item 18 in the pic below.

I have undone it, but once loosened it feels like it could be threaded into sopmething inside the transmission.. nothing worse than the sound of the clunk as something inside the 'box falls off eh!!

Does anyone know if there is a manual, (no pun intended), available for this 'box? I have the Mustang MT82 "book" but it's different in many ways. Nige

Hi nige. I'll spill the info I have on this exact little side project

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62628.html

This is the info I gathered that it was an obscure thread Blackwolf confirmed this as M14 x 1 I couldn't find a redily usable plug that I could of drilled and tapped a thread into to allow a conventional fitting.

So I racked my brains and went with the suggestion of adapting the LR fitting

So Part number LR005014 gets you number 18.

My plan so far that I haven't enacted yet. (work and it being a minor thing) is 3/8 BSP elbow fitting you will have to spec the pipe thickness to what ever your using for the rest of the system.
Why 3/8 bsp? The width between the wider circular area there the screw flats are is 14.9 across

Now according to the internets 3/8 bsp is the metric equivalent to 15.2mm. I just haven't got around to buying a 3/8 bsp plug / bottoming tap to see if .3 of a mm is man enough to get enough thread depth to be able to get the above fitting to work. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

No. That "hollow bolt" retains some internal linkage. Puma 110" SW

You might want to take a look at the thread below (doh! Same link as above!)

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62628.html

The fitting does just unscrew but due to the large diameter, fine thread, and irregular top to the gearbox it is exceptionally difficult to refit without cross-threading.

M14 x 1 is a rare but standard thread. The centre hole of the fitting will take a 1/8" BSPT thread.

I don't think so, why do you think that?

It's certainly tapped and threadlocked into the casing.

Well if true that is news to me.

Reading the workshop manual >>>> https://www.slideshare.net/fajarisnanto/20...l-complete (page 646 onwards) I didn't see reference to the breather bolt playing a critical role. Confused Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the gearbox in the manual. All my searches never came up with dismantling!!

There is no mention of the breather bolt, correct but we all know it’s there. I wonder if it’s holding the front pivot for the main selector. I also notice we no longer have top hat detente that can be pulled out, just blank black plugs now. I guess they need to drilled out?

I have many many items in this manual which bear ne resemblance to my Puma!! Nige

The one I unscrewed and photographed in the other thread was definitely tapped into the casing.

Strange?? However, as I said in my last post there are differences between my 2011 and the manual. For example, non pullable detents, no felt washer on the output shafts or diffs, just a bucket load of bearing fit!! Nige

I think that the blank headed things are actually detent assemblies, i.e., a thing shaped rather like a rifle cartridge with a spring and a ball inside, then the end crimped in enough to retain the ball. These are presumable a light drive fit in the casing. A cheap-and-nasty, sealed-for-life, throw-away detent, if you will.

I cannot really think what could be on the inside under the breather since it is very close to the front wall of the box. Some versions of the box have a selector stop pin further back on the top surface, but the Defender one doesn't. When I unscrewed the one from my spare box (the one in my photos) it unscrewed normally and nothing went clang inside. it is an exceptionally fine thread, though, with a 1mm pitch, and replacement ones are preloaded with thread sealant.

If I can dig out the 'box (it's rather buried in my garage now, I'll see if I can look down the hole with an endoscope. I did discover that if you stand it upright on the bell-housing end when full of oil with the breather fitting removed, a lot of oil comes out rather fast (I imagine with the breather fitted a lot of oil would still come out but slower).

Yeah, the black blank headed items are indeed detents.. what a load of crap eh.. what was wrong with a grub screw, spring and ball, other than manufacturing cost.

I think you have answered your own query with the the fact that the bolt has an M14x1 thread. If it was simply screwed into the ali casing why would they have given it such a fine thread? I'm tempted to strip my box now just to see what it does. Nige

I think it's M14 x 1 because it is a COTS item which has been machined to take the breather fitting, but I agree a pitch that fine in an aluminium part flies in the face of traditional engineering practice. I am however sure that the box I removed mine from has a threaded housing.

I can tell I'm going to have to dig out my box tomorrow.
