^ That sales person probably thinks you'd be better off with an Evoque, and possibly didn't work for the dealer in the distant past when Defenders could be bought. Certainly, the dealership wasn't on that site 3 1/2 years ago. Rolling Eyes

You summed it up with the word 'sales person'. They are commission led people and not enthusiasts.

They are mostly given Evoques though a works lease scheme. The one I was speaking to recently had not even been to Land Rover Experience day.

The sales person will just as likely sell the next person through the door a Jaguar as most dealerships have become single JLR sales floor.

I haven't and wouldn't.

While I expect that the end product might be in the frame as a replacement for my Shogun (which replaced the old Disco 2 because there was nothing in the green oval range that I wanted), I need to know both what it looks like (in all senses including underneath and whether they've stuck with the recent theme of pram wheels and a 2L leafblower under the bonnet) and, just as importantly, roughly what it might cost, before there is any chance of committing.

Also, having spent a number of years as a dealer my default position is to stay away from the first year or so of production. Almost every new model I dealt with in 15 years had at least one massive flaw that the customers found, and the early versions of every model just had loads of teething problems, the later and more complex the vehicles the worse they got and it drove dealerships and customers potty. The first 2 years of the D3 were just a disaster, though the D4 was better as it was an iteration rather than a totally new vehicle. I left before any of the newer stuff came along but it doesn't sound like the survival prospects of the JLR managing director's dog have improved much (for anybody who remembers that episode of Top Gear). ---

I wouldn't put a deposit down for two reasons. Firstly I am naturally averse to giving JLR a sizeable interest-free loan on the vague promise that at some unspecified time in the future I may be offered a vehicle that may or may not be what I want, and secondly because I wouldn't buy a wholly new vehicle (especially from JLR) in the first few months of production, I would wait until those who have bought one to complete the beta testing and find the faults that JLR hasn't managed to find.

Wish it was an interest free loan! The biggest issue if you are not careful is that the total loan will exceed the value of the vehicle. Expect normal JLR levels of depreciation.

If the depreciation is high then people get modern vehicles on a PCP and swap it after three years. This is the next issue for Defender owners, no modifications, no scratches, no dents as the dealer will want it back in re saleable condition. Have a look a the returned vehicle information online if you struggle to sleep. I can't imagine anyone buying one of these to keep forever.

Since 1999 I have only had two Defenders, four since 1994 (110 / 90). My current TD590 I have had for over nine years and will continue for at least another decade. It certainly won't get a message on the infotainment screen to say 'the manufacture will no longer support the software, please update your vehicle or expect certain programmes to stop working, like the brakes and airbag, love and kisses, Hal'.

I have put a deposit down based on what I know and have seen

I have had my D3 now for nine years and there hasn't been anything in JLR's range to replace it. To be fair I have had things go wrong with it but it has now done 240,000 miles for a 05 plate motor. (There is a guy on the D3 sister site who's done over 750,000 however its known as 'trigger' - after the OFAH 'triggers broom' sketch) Still think its brilliant and I'm hoping the Defender will be a good replacement.

If JLR are still about next year mind Wink

I think that the new Defender will probably be a very worthy successor to the Disco 1/2/3/4.

It will not however be a true successor to the old Defender.

Think you are right. I have spent far too much time in Defenders over the years and yet being very tall have never owned one. I know they are charismatic and have great history, but it's time to let it go and move on. IHMO.

I have been trying for over a year now to get a build slot from Land Rover. I want a particular chassis number, to match a 1948 series one. Have not even had the curtesy of a reply. Looks like they will not be getting my money.
Think they are too far down the car sales route to cater for specialist vehicles any more.

I placed an “expression of interest” £1000 deposit with Pentland Bannockburn/ Stirling last year. I’m keen to try the PHEV having sold a perfectly good,100% reliable, Unwarranty-able 3 year old SDv6 HSE Dynamic RRS in part ex for a Mini Countryman PHEV last year. The Countryman PHEV is brilliant and am able to run it about 85% of the time in pure electric mode - the 15% petrol use is the winter time and the few motorway miles I now cover. I Live out in the sticks, 16 miles from nearest town and PHEV works fine for me as away from home charging is as good as free (well £20pa for the RFID card from Chargepoint Scotland for as much lecky as I can use in a year). The plan is to replace the Mini and my TDi300 90 with a SWB PHEV version of whatever comes as a replacement for a Defender 90 SW. i’m sold on plug-in hybrid electric motoring - silent in EV mode, emissions free at point if use in EV mode and i’ve saved heaps of dosh in the year of running the PHEV Countryman - 12 months miles with £300 of petrol - £300 of diesel was used in a month in the RRS so here’s hoping the Defender PHEV system is as good as the BMW Mini’s Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Tim - I hope the Defender PHEV doesn't have the same system as the RR Sport PHEV:

I have seen that one before and it reflects my own findings of the RRS PHEV. My other finding were the 2.0ltr ICE us too big a compromise - when you want so go on the motorway forget it, buy an SDV6 as the 4 pot 2 Ltd sounds like it is revving it’s gut out at 70, the lack of control of the way the power sources change is terrible and range in both ICE and EV mode is too compromised. I’m not saying my Countryman is a lot better but the system works better together and the 1.5ltr 3 cylinder ICE is virtually silent until you really start to welly it. Maybe JLR has asked too much of the system to power a full on 4WD vehicle that is already pretty weighty but asking 2.0ltrs to haul along 2.2t in ICE mode isn’t eco-friendly and that is a problem with my much lighter Countryman - when it’s driven at motorway speeds in ICE mode fuel consumption is terrible just because of having to haul all those batteries along. I have read online of plenty of issues with RRS’s refusing to run in EV mode completely as well. Also the price............... RRS in general is over priced but the PHEV adds more to the cost and it isn’t worth it. I was even told by one salesman “Having run several diesel RRS’s this is not the car for you as a private buyer, it a ‘businesman’s tax dodger ‘ vehicle you would find it too compromised, I wouldn’t recommend one to you” so even the sales people haven’t a lot of confidence in the RRS PHEV. They aren’t that common and for less money you can buy a much nicer fully electric I-Pace that will do as much off-road as most members of the public would want to do. I was staggered at what the I Pace could handle on an LRE site in April and it only had traction control and air suspension -no low ratios at all it relies on its instant torque and on streaming wet trails it gamely followed behind a Defender110, even through 0.5m deep water! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

I’ve just been to see and test drive the new 110 today! I was initially shocked by the sheer size of it from the outside. But once I took it for a test drive we were both totally smitten. It drives beautifully, with the feel of a cross between the old Disco 4 and my friends 2019 Range Rover Vogue.
Love all the quirky Details and the obvious Land Rover detailing.

It was so good we paid our deposit today and are now in the build queue for provisional delivery in late October early November.

Very excited.

Chose the 110 D240 S in Green with khaki green interior. Sunroof. Upgraded to the plainer 5 spoke alloys, off road tyres, wheel arch protection, privacy glass and sun roof. Front & Rear large mud guards. Cold Climate pack. Rubber Mats and finally black and green logos in the wheel centres.

Very excited!!!

in agreement on this one. I actually rather like it and SWAMBO does need a new vehicle. If only it was named "Dosco" Rolling Eyes Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭
