There's another Yakima bike rack which is fixed to the rear wheel

There's also the Thule Sparewheel version. The video below shows the setup on a Defender

I don't think this solution is for driving long distances. 22MY Defender 110 (actual) | 10MY Freelander 2 (history) | 15MY Discovery Sport HSE (history)

Does anyone have any other experiences or recommendations for a bike rack, I need to carry 3 bikes (including 1 e-bike) down to the Alps next month but options seem limited…

![]() Click image to enlarge Ended up buying the Thule Velospace 3, had to also purchase the extra bike rack, which usually means you can carry 4 bikes. Also had to buy the cranked rear support bar to get around the spare wheel taking it back to a 3 bike carrier. It’s solid though and the bikes are all secure, I’m sure one of those extension pieces would have been fine but with a long trip through France ahead I just feel more comfortable with the rack connected straight to the tow bar. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

When you fit one of those towbar-mounted carriers and plug the lights in, does the car then think it’s got a trailer attached?
I’m wondering if it then applies the adjusted gearbox mapping etc. as it normally does with trailers, or whether it somehow knows the difference between a trailer and a bike rack. |

![]() Click image to enlarge Mine thinks there’s a trailer plugged in, no blind spot assist. Couldn’t tell any other difference other than the tow view auto appeared in the cameras ![]() Click image to enlarge |
