Sticky Ignition unit
Hi All

I am having a bit of trouble with my ignition key and getting it to turn on first insertion, its happened twice now, and i have really struggled to start the truck, i 'wiggle' the steering lock and it doesn't make a great deal of difference, its both keys, so not a key issue i think. Is there anything i can do, i don't think its a lubrication issue either, i think its mechanical..

I dread to think how much a replacement firing of an ignition key setup is ?

Thanks

Hi Andy

No i don't think it is, it doesn't stick as such, it just won't turn to position 1, and when switching the engine off, it won't go to position 0/off very easily either, it 'feels' like the barrel and latches are not working correctly, or the steering lock is interfering with it.

I have had similar issues on mine and just put it down to poor tolerances in the sum of the parts. It happens less now but is a pain when it does happen as it can take a minute or more of wiggling to resolve.

What you two are describing is like mine, but that thread got me worried about if it gets worse to a point when it sticks in the on position. Got a xeng barrel lock to fit but have been to worried for months.

It's not easy to change the barrel since the lock assembly is secured to the column by shear-bolts. It is time-consuming.

New lock assemblies are not especially expensive however (though I am not sure about current main dealer prices).

I bought a set consisting of a new stearing column lock assembly (c/w 'ignition'/starter switch) and a driver's door lock assembly when I found that my driver's door lock had siezed, but in the end managed to un-sieze the lock. It was a genuine part from Ebay and was under £50. I bought the pair so that I still only needed one key.

I'm going to have to do mine. It's starting to worry me that it might just stop working altogether.

Someone said that it's a top part of the dash out job .. Is that right? 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Might have to get mine into dealer. I hate the ideas of others fiddling.

I tried some WD40 and it made it even worse. I was all prepared to take it out and had the dash apart and then took the advice of mk1collector (thanks) and got some graphite powder .. It's usable again, Very Happy

Got the graphite lock lubricant from Maplin .. I would give it a go before going to the hassle of changing it. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X
