I can't change the ignition lock due to the security sheath so I'll have 2 different keys Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

It would be much cheaper to buy some graphite powder and spend half an hour wiggling the key in the lock and turning it left and right till it frees up. Ray

When I bought my Defender the driver's door lock barrel was so seized that the key wouldn't go in, let alone turn. I bough a new lock set,but before fitting thought I'd try freeing it off. Half-an-hour with the aerosol penetrating oil and manipulating the key had the lock working fine. Since then I make sure that I use it every month or so to keep it working and it has been ok ever since.

Been there, tried that - after an hour using various tools, graphite, carb cleaner, anti-seize etc. i could get the key in and turn it forward to unlock...however when I turn it back again to remove it, it locks (doesn't "freewheel") and triggers the CDL and alarm. Only then can I get the key out
It's not the pins that are the problem but rather something to do with the rest of the mechanism. In any event, the current lock chronically seizes up no matter what I do (since new), so I'm changing it anyway. Last night I found a temporary solution - I use the spare key to unlock the door then leave it there whilst driving. When I get out I have to lock the door to take it with me. Only the perimetric alarm is armed but that's good enough and there's no nasty noise The ignition barrel sheath info is here (and a lot of other places) http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17090....arrel+lock It basically stops someone hammering a screwdriver into the lock to split it and then twisting it. Two things to bear in mind though: a) once it's fitted you cant get it off to change the lock without a LOT of work b) some have reported that the newest locks have a different design (can't confirm this) Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. It might be worth removing the door card and checking the gubbins behind the lock inside the door. It sounds to me as though just changing the lock barrel may not solve the problem.

If it's that bad I'd take the handle out and remove and clean the barrel the make sure the spring is still intact and all the rods are properly adjusted then it should all work perfectly. There's no way I'd put up with a seperate key for such a simple mechanism. Even your original barrel can be stripped totally down if needed. Ray
