Hi all
you may know that one of our members (Timcat) is on an extended overland trip around Africa at the moment in their magnificent 2012 2.2 110 pop top ‘Henry'. . Sadly they have had a mishap and have had a roll over in one of the national parks. They are both all right with a few scratches and bruises, but there is a a fair amount of body damage to Henry. They have managed to recover the 110 to a safe location and are now looking at the amount of repair work that is needed. The engine and chassis seem to be ok, so it may be a case that they can rebuild and continue on their adventures. Wow... a big set back and no little job to 'fix in the field' this could have been so much worse so easily with a higher bank and multiple roll overs. Nothing really matters beyond no injuries sustained... I wish them both good luck going forward and hopefully this will not be the end of their adventure. An accident like that really emphasises the inadequacies of the stock windscreen frame and roof structure.
I'm glad they're ok, one day they will look back at this as part of the great adventure, but for now it must be distressing. |

Such a shame as the build was a great one, as is the write up and blog. The dash cam footage just shows how quickly it can change.

what a damn shame. but at least they're ok.
another reminder of how incredibly flimsy these defenders are in the upper regions. not only that it looks like it rolled almost for no reason  |

Such a shame but a very emotive and detailed blog of the events. I can only imagine the cheer when the 110 was back on its wheels and the engine started.

Terrible shame, Henry is a lovely machine and well built by James! I have no doubt he will soon be back to A1, the most important thing is everyone is safe and well

Many thanks for the kind words gents, all is not lost Henry is in good hands in Pretoria. The decision was made not to ship back as it’s so un predictable & costly.
We were helped by the Landrover family in SA & given three places to look at for the work to be done. 1st one was good but not up to UK standards, the second was very highly recommended but a long way away in Cape Town ( long way to transport everything we own with no security) The third….a local family run business who were top notch & have a passion for quality. So as it stands Henry is back on his wheels galvanised chassis galvanised bulkhead & everything blasted and re-finished. Engine back in & being re-built as we speak. We have been in the UK sourcing some parts & return to Pretoria Monday to help with the re-build, I’m glad we planned the rear living area as we did ( one high unit one side & porta potty empty! Lashed the other side) which stopped the roof being completely flattened. |

So glad you're all doing well and Henry has another lease of life and your dreams still remain alive.
I bet you're quite excited about getting stuck in with the rebuild! Me and my son Dan had some issues with failed brakes on our second day into our expedition in Chamonix recently which was very stressful for me at the time so i can't imagine how you both felt?? onwards and upwards as they say1 If i can help in anyway sourcing parts or sending parts just give me a shout 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

A 110 with brake failure isn’t fun! Had the same in the Alps, thanks for the kind offer. Parts in SA are very difficult to source & genuine are eye watering with long waiting times. Hence we have 40kg plus going back on the plane. Including an ORE wheel carrier

It's great to hear that you are bouncing back and on the mend,
It has certainly always been my feeling that for a heavily laden overlanding vehicle there is an almost overwhelming argument in favour of a full cage (as far as I can tell from your video Henri rolled slowly once, and it was the weight of the vehicle rather than pre-roll kinetic energy that did the damage). I had however never previously considered the problem of combining a cage with a pop-top though, which on the face of it is an impossible combination. I wonder if anyone has managed to do this? Anyway I hope the rebuild is successful and the adventure continues, perhaps with less excitement. I shall look forward to the "Henri reborn" video. Good luck! |

Hello Roger, yes having a pop top has its drawbacks. I’ve also thought about this & we are on the edge of our weight limit plus I’ve never seen a viable solution for a front cut away roll cage. |
