OK, ignoring Britpart and Allmakes, we have Lucas at £28 and Genuine LR at £52. Skip, your thread implied that the part is made by Lucas, so would the 'genuine' LR and Lucas be one and the same? Note, they look different in the photos I've seen. If they are different, would we trust Genuine LR over Lucas? Price not an issue, getting the best part is. Thumbs Up

From Lucas’ own website. Looks like it is primarily a licensed brand, so who knows what you are getting ...

2000s
The noughties was an eventful decade for Lucas. In 2003 the decision was made by TRW to license the Lucas brand to specialist licensees who could continue the development and investment of the Lucas programs.
At this time Lucas has been trading continuously for over 125 years and is world famous as a supplier of premium quality, technically excellent automotive and motorcycle products for both vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket.

2010s
Today Lucas continues to grow in these channels while dynamically expanding into new markets with new products. Lucas is a thriving global brand with a strategic network of Lucas businesses, head licensees and distributors together contributing to worldwide sales of over $100 million. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

All much of the same even Bosch branded products can be made by overlap manufacturers, personally I would avoid anything from China unless it’s a recognised quality brand. Even then it can be fake Banging Head Exclamation Ride like you stole it!!

Unfortunately the Lucas brand is no longer a guarantee of quality. Lucas went bust years ago taking their pension provisions with them. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

I'm not sure that Lucas was ever actually a guarantee of quality! Its global reputation has never been great.

This the one I fitted, it looked / matched exactly the old one off a 2.4 MY2011 it had LUCUS moulded into the rear.

I was so pleased to finally get an intermittent non-starting problem solved that after a few months and
certainty this was my cause I bought another one (which of course I'll hopefully never need Smile

If you buy a lucas and it's in a red box, good luck with where it came from

If you buy a lucas and it's in a green box, it's genuine old stock.

I second the ignition switch issue, it can throw up all sorts of issues which you never feel are related to it.

Sometimes you can get away witjh just replacing the end cap with the terminals on

you will need new shear bolts though

Chucked in a new Varta Start-Stop battery and ‘boom’ everything working tickety-boo. I think the cold was making what seemed to be the original battery, (80k miles/ten years). play silly b*ggers. Hence the erratic starts. No need for new starter now. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

But with the immediate restart showing no mechanical effort whatsoever, I'm thinking electrical rather than fuelling, although all lights and ancils seem to work fine. Thumbs Up

Since PbSb battery packs have been replaced by PbCa, battery failure anounces differently.

Checking the tension is always a good idea

Agreed Julie. I eventually found my tester and the battery was way under 50%. With the cold it was just a disaster. All good now. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Update - back to square one.
Well, it seems I was a little over enthusiastic. We’re back to square one. New battery was down to under 50% within a couple of days. Indeed it was clearly draining even earlier, as the day after it was fitted and I announced all was fine, it fired in the morning but then on a visit to various shops, with a bit of stop-start, it had one single failed turn-over, before continuing normally. By the following morning, nada. As previously described, light cluster comes on, glow plug eventually goes out and then, on turning the key, I hear just two turn overs before it cuts out. Light cluster stays lit (and relights if I turn the car off and on again immediately), but there is no power to the starter. If I wait a minute, power resumes to the starter and it does the turn over thing again.

So, Just recharged the battery overnight and still not working. Still turning the starter twice, then stopping. I’m going to buy a multimeter, but I’m wondering what could be draining the battery? Could it be the starter itself? What should I be testing? I’m not electrically minded, so rarely mess around with wiring. As a heads up, the only electrics I’ve touched in the last few weeks have been new LED headlights, (but fitted since the problem first started), repairing a faulty LED reverse light, done before the problem started. Some months ago I started noticing feedback through my tweeters, so I also unplugged and then replugged/fitted my headset, not sure if that could be creating any kind of drain.

The problem has been worst over the past 10 days, which has also tied in with sub-zero conditions. I know this affects batteries, but given I’ve added a new one, that can’t be it.

So, why’s the battery draining?
What should I check for?
I’ve heard of problems with the mega fuse
Do we think this sounds like the starter is dead, and it is draining the battery?

Etc etc etc

Thanks as always Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

ALL SORTED

Culprit was the 5€ battery affecting the PI. New one in, now works like a dream.

I’d like to claim supreme intelligence for this discovery, but actually it was reading endless threads that led me to a single line in a post by a Guardian Angel. Otherwise known as Blackwolf. Bow down

We’ll see if this ‘perfect starter’ remains the case tomorrow . Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier
