That's seriously impressive (even if I was beginning to feel sick from their gratuitous drone footage).

Super slippy rock crawling.

Mine has a rear locker. Although I've taken it off the tarmac plenty, I've not done anything that would trouble it like these guys have. Nice to see someone really put it through its paces. It looks like it covered itself admirably. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

The same defender I buy in Montreal is in the showroom in Mongolia,

I always thought the North American spec was a particular one all of it's one in JLR terms?

Not from what I can see — the P300 Defender may have an accessory or two available elsewhere that is not available here, but the core vehicle is the same (Same engine and trans, same body, same electronics systems, etc.) worldwide. I may be wrong though, I’m still learning and evaluating this rig.

Seems rear lights are different, there's software configs that are different and a number of other parts unique to US standards...

PowerfulUK just put up a video explaining the differences between ROW and USA market rear lighting that shows the difference - they demo it with the Defender X smoked units that they sell but standard unsmoked units work the same way.

From ZA, two new Defenders having some fun offroad. Both with rear E-diff and advanced offroad package. White has 19 inch Goodyear Wrangler Adventurers A/Ts, while Brown has 22 inch.

Owner's thoughts:

Quote:
Suspension offroad works exceptionally well.
Approach angle, departure angle and ground clearance are very good.
Weakest point is the breakover angle. Would have been better to have moved the rear axle a bit further forward (but that would obviously sacrifice benefits in other areas like road holding and interior packaging etc)
Inherent traction is in line with a Land Cruiser and Patrol. IOW: exceptional
Glossy black B pillars scratch almost by just staring at it.
Aural parking aids are an irritant.
User friendliness of offroad software isn't great having to do it thorough the touch screen.
Cameras are crisp, crystal clear and sharp!

Aural parking aids are dead easy to silence, just tap the speaker icon on the touch screen in parking cam mode to silence them. They are very sensitive but like my previous RRS’s etc you can vary the volume of the peeping with the radio volume controller while they are peeping. The volume of the sat nav instructions is adjusted the same way. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Just came back from a trail drive, which has a training obstacle course - side slopes, cross-axles, hill climbs, etc., all on very loose sandy/clay soil.

We put my mate's Defender through it in various modes, and there was very little to no spin in the correct modes. This is because we figured out that when you switch off the car, it DOESN'T remain in the Terrain Mode, but defaults back to Comfort, which then results in loads of wheelspin.

Thanks to PowerfulUK for their detailed video on this:

One more thing - this is software dependent, because unlike their video, our Defender defaulted back to Comfort mode regardless of which mode it was previously in when switched off! --

If you select “Auto TR” then that mode doesn’t reset to comfort mode on switch off, it stays in Auto. One thing I remember from my RRS days with the rotary knob, they also reset to Auto TR2/ Highway mode when you switched off the engine. I cannot remember if the knob stayed in the up position or disappeared back down into the console though. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Tim, we tried Auto mode, and it DID switch back to Comfort after switching off the car.

We basically tried to replicate PowerfulUK's video, and were surprised by that one difference - down to software updates perhaps?

On my RRS, it doesn't reset, as the rotary dial keeps the setting 'alive'? --

My first impression of the new Defender
Took the FL2 in to the dealers for an MoT yesterday & took a 110 First Edition for the day.

First thoughts on opening the door & seeing the water drip onto the edge of the seat was that's poor design. Judging by the state of the seat it looks like it wasn't the first time it's done it & it also suggests the seat material/colour don't help either...

Next thought was there is far too much gimmickry inside, electric seats, flat screen controls, etc. but at least it has electric adjustable mirrors. Unfortunately once I'd got the seat in the right position for me I had to adjust the mirrors too - I'm 6' 2", but it seems that they don't adjust far enough for me to get a good view in them - too much of the bodywork in view & not enough of the area around the car that door mirrors are there for. This is not helped by the fact the loan car had the 'pannier' stuck on the side further reducing visibility.

Things weren't much better with the near side mirror - for such a big unit that takes up so much space, nearly half the height of the window, & obstructs so much of the view out of the window, it provides very little assistance in actually seeing what's behind you...

The interior rear view mirror was also lacking, with the view blocked by the spare wheel... Overall vision of what is behind you is not good, either when you're driving or when trying to manoeuvre into parking spaces etc.

As far as the driving experience goes, I found it very sterile, it could have been any people carrier with an underpower engine & auto gearbox. The poor little engine, which might generate 240bhp, is being pushed too far in my opinion & simply didn't have the 'go' a vehicle of this size needs or deserves. Once it's up to speed it'll sit there but getting there seemed an effort & pulling away to enter a busy roundabout on the local ring road saw a slow start followed by a rather alarming kick down & thrashing of the engine when a bit more throttle was fed in.

The styling is slowly growing on me, it may just be that I am becoming more used to seeing them, & does seem to be more acceptable in certain colours.

Overall, it's just another model in an already crowded model line up, it's not a natural successor to the old Defender & seems 'lost' & without purpose. Many say it should have been the replacement for the D4 but as someone's who has driven a D4 for the last 4 years, I would say it lacks the presence, comfort & capability of a D4 so can't agree with that.

Maybe I will change my mind after driving one at LRE - hopefully they'll have introduced the V6 diesel from the D5 to the range by then, it's the engine it really needs.

The First Edition has the Clearview rear view mirror so you don’t need to see the spare or all the headrests from the back seats if you had used that. The switch over for it is like the RVM “dipping” switch on older cars, I find the rear view view is OK, or maybe I’ve just got used to it and the view rearwards from an Evoque was much worse without a spare wheel on the back door!
Door mirrors - I don’t have a problem with the driver’s door one but I don’t have that stupid box on the side. The near side one though is half obscured by the body for 5ft 7” short me and it won’t move outwards any further.

Water stains - even the Ebony interior stains badly. I ve the Acorn too like your loaner had and the detailers I use dried the seats out with a heater and then treated them with some sort of interior protection when they put the ceramic paint protection on mine and even the leak into the car didn’t stain the seats after that. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

It’s not the V6 from the Disco, it’s the new straight six 3.0 MHEV that is going into the Defender.

I doubt it will get the V6 from the D5, the 21MY has just been updated with the new straight 6 ingenium engines which the D5 will get.

EDIT - Must type faster Laughing

no V6 , they are replacing the 4 cylinder diesels with the straight 6 MHEV,s with 200, 250 and 300 HP options,
the D300 would have been my choice if it had hit the market sooner..
