So I'm guessing Macron hasn't managed to take the unions much over there?

I get the subsidised, too big too fail 'jewels' argument (its a price some societies are willing to pay). But assuming the Grenadier is built in France, it would be such an incredible shame if French unions wasted this opportunity for local French workers by making life hell for INEOS (and all at the expense of possibly more productive Welsh workers).

Personally, I see this as a British-led and inspired European project, so where the Grenadier is built doesn't really matter to me, provided the quality and numbers stack-up. You just have to wonder how INEOS will be able accurately put together a true cost/benefit analysis when union disruption is such a random, and potential 'extinction level' threat to their new enterprise.

Have to confess that I also wondered about the French propensity to go on strike.

You can't deliver many vehicles if there are burning tyres in the road outside your factory.

Whilst I well remember the awful 1970's in this country, I cannot recall Solihull, Toyota/Swindon or Sunderland/Nissan going on a major strike at all.

Or did I miss it.....?

Is Unionisation as big now in France as it was?

Bar the railways in this country, and airline pilots, I think these days you are hard pressed to find many who bother to pay union subscriptions?

I wonder if the same has happened in France? Does the French still have closed shops where employees have to belong to a Union? Could Ineos open a plant without Union recognition in France?

I find a general disinterest with the younger colleagues of places where I have worked in paying Union Subscriptions. I’ve heard people threaten to get the Union involved when things get difficult, but when you ask them whether they are Members, they are not and they assume that it is a free service for all 😳 Just wondered if the same has happened across the pond?

Talking of the workforce, it seems they have already bent over backwards to help keep the place open:

"The Smart plant in Hambach is not just a factory for the French government. In a way, the work made industrial history. A few years ago, when Daimler asked the employees to make a financial sacrifice to further develop the location, there was a tough internal conflict. Not only the radical but also the moderate unions opposed Daimler’s intention – with the indication that the workers had already made sacrifices.

The then plant manager, who has since left, organized a ballot in the plant. The majority of employees decided to extend working hours without wage compensation. After several weeks of discussions, the result of the vote was implemented.

In a way, Hambach has become a symbol in France for the fact that the willingness of workers leads to concessions to secure jobs. Daimler’s intention to sell the plant now acts as a provocation for the French."

Daimler look like they made be made to pay to be able to walk away, Ineos could be looking at a real gift horse.

Big demands by the Unions:
"The ministry told them that it was receiving Ineos on Friday to study the viability of the project of this buyer, the only one known to date in the public arena. The unions explained their desire to diversify the activities of their site to no longer depend on a single product. They also require the future car buyer to undertake to guarantee employment for at least eight years, as Daimler had done by announcing the manufacture in Hambach of its electric Mercedes SUV, which will ultimately be done elsewhere. Since the end of June and the announcement by Daimler of the sale of their factory, unions and employees have been in the dark and are counting on the government for answers.

The delegation was made up of five unions from the Smart factory (CGT, CFDT, CFTC, FO, CFE-CGC) and five unions from subcontracting companies: Faurecia (CFDT), ThyssenKrupp (CFTC), Magna Chassis (FO ) and SAS Automotive (CFE-CGC and CGT). Me Blindauer, employee advocate and Didier Guyot of 3EConsultants, advisor to the CSE Smart, also accompany the delegation."

It makes a lot of sense.

It’s just sad as Bridgend have had enough bad luck with job losses over the last few years. About time they had a bit of good fortune.

I saw that and wondered if I'd uplift from one to the other, house, kid's school, etc and for a job that may last 3 to 5 years and then leave me stranded a few hundred miles from home?
