Appreciate that Jonathan.

As you might have read on the other thread, I am more inclined to keep it original with the 19J.
Relocating the engine mounts would definitely be something I do not want to do. I do not have the courage to take the angle grinder to a perfect chassis. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi Retroanaconda,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Yes, I think I want originality first and foremost. Why? Kind of sentimental... I practically own this 90 since I got my drivers license. Have so much memories, mostly nice memories of my younger age.
I am very sure that the tdi makes it more drivable... and noisier, but I lived with a 19J for the best part of 20 years before getting a second car as my daily. When the restoration started, I missed it so much, that went about and got myself a puma. I will not argue with anyone if the puma has the best drivability.. but it filled my gap.

Yes, locally 200 are alse scarce, but may become available as I see a trend of people fitting Td5, as they are quite plenty from breaking D2s. In the meantime, I will continue my quest to get the 19J repaired, if possible.

Not sure what information you need on the paint setup, but generally this is what I do:
Steel parts:
Depending in size and function / exposure to elements they will be zinc plated or hot dipped.
Etch primer, I use an industrial primer, 2 part 1:1 with activator. This is high in zinc chromate.
Then they get minimum 2 coats of satin 2k black paint. This is also industrial grade. I let coats dry so can sand between coats to get a very smooth finish. Where I need it more hard wearing, I use 3 coats.

Bodywork, similar to above, no galvanizing though. Depending on scratch level from the body work, I use high build primer, 2k after the etch primer. I also give 2 coats, sanding between coats.

It gives me quite a tick layer of paint. Have not neasured thickness, but I think I have around 100microns of paint thickness.

I can understand your attachment to the vehicle and it’s originality, I have had my 90 since just after I started driving and am quite fond of the Tdi despite its mileage and the fact that there are other much better and newer engines that could be retro-fitted.

Thanks for the info on painting, you’ve achieved a good finish.

A little update with a picture of 2 half engines. I trust that eventually I will have one good engine. Lots of cleaning needed... and the list of engine parts to buy is growing...but will get there.

Thank you James. Embarassed
Most of the paint on front part of the chassis is original. Had painted the dumb iron and the front most cross member at some point in its life, as those were not protected by the 19J blow by (given the speed it could go at) Rolling with laughter
The heat shield on the bulkhead is original as well, and mostly unmarked. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

A short update..
Apart from wiping and wiping old waxes, and oily dust build up, the bulkhead to chassis harness has been disconnected.... which leaves the only obvious choice... that is to take out the bulkhead. Was not in the plan, but will make painting the bulkhead much easier and better. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Yeah, Thats what I thought. I do not want to put everything back together and then regret something that I missed or skipped intentionally. The problem is that I am still turning screws anti clockwise. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I really do not know where to stop...
Bulkhead has been almost stripped. Still need some careful peeling of the heat shield as want to re use them.

I am not sure if I should just paint it, or have it galvanized and then painted. I do not think the galvanizing is able to go in between areas where it is double skinned. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Can't help you with to or not to galvanise the bulkhead but you should be able to stop taking it apart when there is no more bits to take apart so keep going as your doing an awesome job on the 90 Bow down 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Removed the panhard rod bracket from the chassis. Where the bush locates was quite worn. Actually the pic shows the better side. Other side was worn by at least 0.5mm.
Checked the prices for a new one... Shocked
So worth a try filling with weld and re grind. Jury rigged a grinding system and worked really well.

Quick escape to the workshop.. I knew that I had the dim dip controller PRC6336 disconnected long time ago. IIRC, the problem then was that the dip would stay on, even with the light switch off. Since had little time, and did not feel like getting dirty, turned my attention to the electronics Laughing
Turns out that the little green transistors had shorted, and hence the dip were getting full voltage all the time.
I do not have any equivalent transistors (but have some mosfets which would also work), but have tested the control circuit with some cheap D882 transistors that I had lying around. This confirmed that the control circuit works (works on a PWM). Output voltage was about 6V. It pulses, hence the interference in the radio when the side lights are on. Rolling with laughter
PRC6336 are quite some money to buy new, so happy that they are fixable for a Pound.
