As I have the same technical ability of a goldfish when it comes to understanding engineering matters (I knew the answer 5 seconds ago

What is the difference between LR's Defender Clutch Pedal Spring Assist upgrade and this one being offered as they both look the same to me. Zed - thanks for the feedback on the clutch. Sounds good. I'll keep these in mind.
On the spring, I emailed them this morning just to check that I was understanding the website correctly, that their spring is 45% lighter than the standard one of the same shape. Luke replied pretty quickly and confirmed exactly that, so for that price it has to be worth a punt I think. Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. Just ordered one from LOF.
I have a few problems with my left leg so this might help. Thanks for the pointer gents. 
Word must be spreading as I noticed they'd added the following statement to the LOF website over the past couple of days: *Please note, due to high demand, there may be a 2/3 day delay in despatching orders, Apologies for the delay!* Fingers crossed it'll make a noticeable difference |

I made a post about this yesterday not realising this post already existed...
I bought one of these springs and fitted it after a lot of stress and frustration - Seriously this was one of the most frustrating and annoying jobs I've done on my defender! 
I'm not sure I actually like it over the stock one, its definitely lighter but the tension seems to change suddenly depending on how high up the pedal is, I didn't notice this with the original? I'm hoping I'll get used to it and its just the change I don't like, especially after putting so much effort into fitting it I was wondering if anyone else has changed theirs to the LOF one and what they thought of it? |

Which did you have before. The Land Rover version of the same spring, or a standard long spring. I noticed what you mentioned when I swapped from the long one, but soon adjusted to it.

Its the spring rating i.e. the amount of effort needed to move the pedal. Its like comparing standard land rover springs and Alive Comfort springs Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

As Arc said it is to do with spring rating. As the clutch pedal is depressed energy is stored in the spring to assist the clutch pedal to rise with the assistance of the stored energy of the spring.
Stored energy in the spring will depend on wire gauge size used, diameter of spring coil and the elasticity of the metal used. Now a small change in diameter wire gauge will change amount of stored energy/force required to depress clutch pedal. What is the difference between this LOF and DA1266.TR at £14 inc VAT? (Apart from colour?) Now we drive 300 TDi and 2.2 as daily drivers. I have had both knees totally replaced and have never really struggled with the clutch. After left knee total replacement I was driving the 300 TDi within 3 weeks and physo told me it was good exercise for my left knee!

I have the LR version fitted and the same thing with left knee problems. The spring mod although helps it is still sometimes painful to depress the clutch pedal. I thought when reading the description on the companies web site that this LOF spring was the solution, I know do not think so. So It might be that the Red Booster is the only solution, however, I will wait to see more reviews on this thread to see what others think once they have fitted the LOF spring. I was lucky enough to have one of the pre-production ones from Luke. Both me and my wife could tell the instant improvement to the force required to depress the clutch pedal.
I’ve probably done a couple thousand miles with it fitted, along with Luke’s road spec clutch and one of Synchros slick shift the driving experience is a lovely one. I’d recommend LOF clutches to anyone as not only does he do clutches but also all the extra bits you’d want to change in process (release bearings, slave cylinders, pilot bearings, rear crank seal, mt82 adaptor shaft) so everything can be purchased from one person and all arrive at the same time. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

Now whilst I have had major knee problems, both knees totally replaced within 4 months of each other and rarely felt any pain on left knee.
Which gets me thinking. What is the range of forces required to depress the standard Defender clutch? OK there is a variation on the force different people can exert through their left knees and also different pain levels. How much does drivers seating position and actual seat contribute towards the ease/difficulty in changing gears? Brendan |
