Just a couple of the L/H wing. Got this nasty bug that's floating about so all I did was get the wheels on and get her ready to move so I can fit the shot blasting cabinet etc. in to my workshop.

Its been a busy few weeks since the last post.
I had to put it together for a bit of 4x4 rescue during the cold spell. The misses car died and my battery on it's own wouldn't jump it. Had to pull her out the garage and have some fun!...

Then we had the snow and were snowed in for 5 days. We ran out food so a friend of ours manage to get to within a mile and a half of the house with supplies. The only way to get there was to put the Landy together again as above and drive the deserted lanes to pick up supplies. I've got the pics and video so will put them up later.

So... advice needed.

At what point is a chassis un-saveable?

I can do the rear cross member, I could put on new spring mounts;

The big shock was how bad the (I think) mid section cross member is...

I've had a quick look for a repair section but not quite sure what it's called or if it exists. Truth is, if I can't repair it, the Landy is gonna be off the road for a while!

If it's a keeper then I would look into getting a replacement chassis. Or at least a rear quarter chassis. Now is the time for a chassis swap if ever you are going to do one.

Having said that, a well executed and protected rear 1/4 chassis should last a while - depends how good the front end is Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

There's no way I can budget for a new chassis this year, I'm desperate to save it. The rear 1/4s I've looked at don't have the mid section bit I need (is it called the mid-section cross member?), but I'm hoping it wouldn't be too difficult to get one fabricated.
I've never welded in my life so a quick course is on the cards.

I'm still snowed in today, our lane's got solid drifts and it's covered in ice. I'll have to get the farmer to clear it. Gives me another day in the workshop though.

Job for today is the fuel tank. It's being difficult, bolts are solid and I'm not too keen on getting the angle grinder that close.

I want to get her up onto breeze blocks today as well. I plan on overhauling both axles, brakes etc.

Once the chassis is as stripped back as I can get it, It'll be out with the wire brushes and flap discs ready to survey the extent of the rot.

The initial plan was a nuts and bolts rebuild but I've made the fatal mistake of looking through Google images at other Landy projects... I fancy turning her into a double-cab pickup now!

That crossmember carries the rear suspension upper links and is generally known as the A-frame crossmember. A known rot spot.

While you could repair that chassis it would be, in my opinion, an inefficient use of time and money. It will almost certainly be rotten on the inside in numerous areas. Would be a good way to learn to weld but make sure you’ve got the knack before you start sticking things on - it’s all load bearing and if things fall off it’s bad news.

A new chassis is expensive but it’s future proof and massively increases the value of the vehicle - if that’s a consideration at all.
