If the drum is old and worn heavily, the lip created on the drum could prevent the shoes from passing as you pull the drum off. If there is an adjuster, back it off as much as possible. If there isn't one, make sure the master cylinder has no pressure on it at all and try to pull it back as much as possible, as this will pull the slave cylinder back in as far as possible, hopefully bringing the shoes with it.
Failing that, a piece of 2x4 and a 10lb tapometer usually does the trick. Nice paint job... looks much better. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender. |

Had a spare hour this evening in between making packed lunches for the kids tomorrow and cooking dinner...
Watched a few you tube clips in preparation. Wheel wire brushed, sanded down, cleaned and then ready to spray. Started with this. Click image to enlarge I will give it a 3rd coat tomorrow but I'm happy with the results given never ever done this before. I have new tyres to go on also. My plan maybe to fit alloys but thought I might as well make these smart anyway. Given less than an hour for the wheel pleased with that. |

OK, Have managed a little time in the garage, in between back from a lovely holiday and starting back at work
Decided for now not to go the alloy wheel route as my new moto Keep the Sankey simple however I wanted to sort the hubs in case I do in the future. So thought about this... and came up with a solution (I think) 5mm steel plate fitted the gap I cut off. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Then as I cannot weld needed an option to hold it in place, so interweb came in handy. Special glue  after sanding down the edges fitted the plate. Then had bought some center caps and had to cut the tabs off the back.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Wanted to have a quick look what it looked like so loosely fitted the wheel. I'm pleased with this should look even better with the 5 small bolts painted and new Tyre on.

I only wanted to see what it looked like so didn't even tighten them, it was just to hold the wheel.
It back off now ready for the new tyre. Good spot  |

Not much time spent on the Sankey, got some projects on in the garden requiring my time
Anyway managed to get one of the wheels fitted with a tyre matching my truck, bit disappointed even though its a trailer wheel they scuffed the edge a bit. Looks much better though given I sprayed it. Click image to enlarge Then managed to angle grind the other carrier off the hub on the other side, messy job but I've done the other side and it looks ok so will be ready if I do fit alloys. I've swapped my nuts round the correct way
I'm still worried about having ago at painting (spraying) myself.... never sprayed anything before the steel wheels on this sankey. I guess nothing to lose, I can always get it blasted and someone else do it.... |

Does it have to be sprayed ? I s 2 or 3 coats by roller not good enough ? It's a thicker , neater more robust finish in my view.

Very little to update,
Got the other Tyre swapped for a Continental matching the car, was funny as I left it with the tyre place and collected it later. Came back and a different guy there, I said " I come to collect the trailer wheel'. Off they go looking for it and look confused then I spot it leaning on the wall. So said 'thats it over there' he looked at it and looked at me, A Trailer? he said... Yes its an ex army one, not a normal garden tip one the wheel / tyres was probably the biggest thing in the workshop !
So tonight job fit the 5mm plate on the hub. The tomorrow spray it and fit the wheel center. Click image to enlarge |

OK little bit of painting today after much sanding.
Its not perfect but its in keeping with the trailer and better (for me than the Nato green) Took the front and rear reflectors off, that was fun they didn't want to budge..... OK in between rain showers and I really need power (lights in my garage) even during the day its gone so grey its hard to see.
Tried spraying the rear tailgate on the inside. Click image to enlarge Not sure I'm happy spraying and also I think the finish is Harder (is feels more robust) painted so think I'm going to try and roller paint with a small roller brush. I've started doing the trims and awkward bits by hand. what primer and paint have you used? I used bog standard Halfords primer and the rust started to come thru after a while. I guess if you are overlaying this with rust treating paint like hammerite etc should be ok. I'm onto my tub now. 2-3 coats of zinc oxide and first coat of satin black Hammerite but painting it on with brush. Doesn't go on terribly well with first coat but hoping subsequent coats apply better. Have got a small roller as well to try applying to larger flat areas.
