Germany 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Baltic Blue
Just checked the eBay ones - presumably I could buy a few solid ones and drill my own holes...

The ones with mounting hooks (open holes) are presumably meant to slip in between a gap without having to undo the bolts entirely. Does that make sense?

I'll go Thud in advance... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Mal - I see what you mean now that makes perfect sense. It still doesn't alter the fact in my case that the EGR would still play up so I will need one anyway. BUT with a new EGR and everything settled down the blanks would certainly be something to look into! Thank-you for taking the time to explain and reply. Thumbs Up

Matt - I guess you could but how about precision? I think you'd ideally need a pillar drill to do it properly and even then you'd have top be very precise. I guess it depends if they are precision engineered or simply need a certain dia. hole only. Personally I'd just buy them if you can if not then try it out. Perhaps someone more 'techy' could inform you better. Ze, Steve,

No worries....I am running on a 12mm blank and have been for some 2 years 3 months. I do occasionally (when the weather is cold only in the Winter months) get a MIL light with associated P1103 code maybe once a month. I have not had any EGR related faults since whereas I endured a fair few previous.

Undoubtedly since then there have been further developments in the EGR blanking scene and I am unsure where exactly we stand now? The first on the scene with a solution I believe was BAS with an ECU 'switch off' procedure which as stated I didn't have a BAS map.

The basic blanking with an orifice for me is a well-proven, economy improving and trouble-free modification that I carried out before warranty expiry and one I would carry out again in the event of nothing more convenient being available.
I also didn't like the idea of blanking off the EGR valve completely and running with a permanent MIL light as this could in my view mask a more serious problem should one have arose.

I do wonder if any of the other individuals who purchased the original blanks are still running with them? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Quick question - is there a bit of movement between the EGR flange/exhaust manifold when the nuts are undone, or will I have to remove the exhaust manifold entirely? I only need a cm or so to slip the plate in. Also - did you take precautions against a leaky join when reassembling?

There is loads of room to insert the plate and you do not have to use a sealant.

I don't use the plates any longer but when I did I changed it quite a few times without any issues

Bear in mind also that all the EGR bolts have a torque setting to be tightened to ideally so if you have a torque wrench they are:
10 NM (7lb.ft) for the M6 bolts
23 NM (17lb.ft) for the M8 bolts

Confused Don't I just have to loosen the two nuts holding the EGR pickup pipe to the exhaust manifold and slip the plate in?
Hence my question about how much "give" when the nuts are undone...
Hope I'm not being too optimistic.
The EGR itself is a Censored to get to Sad

You shouldn't have too much trouble with it. I will be replacing mine completely all being well end of this week coming. As regards getting to it. It is difficult yes but what I'd do is wear a pair of disposable gloves that way it will at least protect the back of your hands a bit from scrapes and scratches (Even if it does tare them up) Also far easier to do with a socket set than with spanners I'd have thought due to the tight access.

Confused I don't want to touch the EGR itself...
I thought you can just loosen the two stud nuts on the exhaust manifold/EGR pickup at the rear of the engine and slip the plate in.

Top Tip!
Top Tip....

Left hand side of engine, locate EGR Valve manifold branch and remove the two M8 bolts retaining gasket! At this juncture remove the studs and replace with two bolts M8 bolts it makes future swap outs so much easier and less time consuming.
