I was with my RR classic in the Pyrenees and no problem of power to go up in the mountains ...
I did buy a defender 2.2 in 2012, and if in low gear, no power at all, ...

I didn't bother getting a new plug but wrapped a couple of turns of thread tape around the old one. Works well with no drips.
