At the end of the day, all other things being equal, live axles will always outperform independent suspension when crawling over rough terrain.

The new Defender isn't built for hardcore offroading ...

I don't have a problem with it as a car. It's a perfectly acceptable family hauler with light utility/off-road capabilities.

The problem is Land Rover trying to replace the Defender with it.

Sorry, it's just not growing on me. The design is mediocre, and that's before it's mechanical inadequacies.

Back to the drawing board land rover, this is not a Defender.

Considering the amount of development time it is taking before launch it will have to be the best 4x4 by far! Smile


It's not... Land Rover gave up on the 4x4 market when it dropped the live axles.

I'd be interested in something like this when my 2.4 TDCi gives up the ghost (hopefully in many years time).

A 6BT is massive overkill for a Defender, they're the sort of thing fitted to a 7.5t lor ...

Full Ladder Chassis
Body sections mounted via rubber mounts
Much stronger solid axles
The current defender wheel bolt pattern
Selectable 2wd/4wd transfer case
Modular constructio ...

5.0 petrol V8 non-supercharged please with a nice strong 6 speed manual gearbox and manual transfer case.
