Sounds like an injector issue. Ask your dealer to do an injector "re-learn". They basically reset the injectors.
 Urgent help! no power after new engine installation!

Just rebuilt my 2009 2.4 and had a similar issue - a change of injectors cured the problem.

Problem solved. When I replaced the fuse I put it into the wrong slot. Feeling a touch embarrassed Whistle

Thanks for the tips. The only one I was capable of doing was the "soft reset" which, unfortunately, didn't work.

What about stuffed injectors? They would certainly cause a knock, although I'm not mechanically-minded enough to explain why faulty injectors would lead to an increase in oil consumption.

Looks very similar to what I get when I drain of a bit of diesel from my fuel filter. I have been told it's algae, but hopefully someone else can confirm / refute that.

Have you tried Paul Close at The Centre? 031-3378521, he's way more clued up on Defenders than the dealers are.
