Hi Caterham, I don't think that's normal. I would expect any fuel to have a homogenous appearance.
Raises a few questions but I guess you probably know the answers.

Looks very similar to what I get when I drain of a bit of diesel from my fuel filter. I have been told it's algae, but hopefully someone else can confirm / refute that.

MOG - yes from the bottom of the filter (which I guess its shows its doing what it should?)

bearing in mind I don't 'off road' it and the fact its always been like that makes me think its simply the quality of the fuel?

I'm confident its not algae or similar but some kind of oil based liquid. that said I guess if its simply dirty water that would sink too??

as said not too concerned / its normal but a little surprsing all the same?

Indeed the filter is doing what it should and that is helping to prevent crud from bulk tanks etc making it through to the noisy end of the vehicle Thumbs Up Steve.

I may be totally wrong here but this is my understanding.

The Bio that the put into fuel is still a live thing (not dead) and it will continue to grow even in fuel and has been known to completely block filters and fuel lines. I have not had the problem myself but know a of two people that had the problem.

I own a caravan and for sometime now I have had to regularly clean out the flush system as they have started to put a bio additive in the chemical flush and that grows unless killed off with a product known to kill all known germs. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

thanks Steve.

might be bio stuff..... I think I'm gonna try and collect more of it to try and understand what the crud is....
perhaps it is bio?

does anyone else drain the filter on a regular basis and do you find the same?

It looks like sludgy water, perhaps with a bit of "diesel bug"

Errm. No, sorry. Dad makes biodiesel (proper stuff not the 6-10% mix in standard road fuel) and there is nothing 'living in it'. BIOdiesel simply means that the oil from which the diesel is produced (ie waste chip pan, rape seed oil etc) is of a 'renewable' (don't go there) source.

Besides petrol station / supermarket fuel is only 5-10% bio at the most.

Answering the original question, I drained mine the other week and just got a little bit of fine sediment and some brownish fuel, followed by clean fuel. What you have just looks like a bit of gunk, nothing to worry about IMO - filter doing it's job. Cheers, David

someone else that make bio...... Very Happy

same here looks like a bit of 'brown fuel' and then all clear.
as mentioned not concerned its always been like it but more wondering if its in fuel to start with or getting in from somewhere else.?

might try running the car on a low tank and just topping up a little at a time to see if makes any difference?

I'm not familiar with the fuel drain on a Puma, but if it is like a TD5, road dirt and muck can end up sat in the drain and will be ejected when one opens the drain, thus giving you what appears to be really mucky fuel.

I wouldn't worry about it... That must have been filtered out of a number of tanks of fuel and built up since you last drained / changed filter.

Mine was much worse after I picked up some cr*p fuel the other week , and Censored my 110 up! (Not necessarily directly the fault of the fuel) Cheers, David
