Is the through flow of coolant more controllable than the original plastic one or is it still just a choice between cold and then very warm/hot no matter where the dial on the dash is set?

The larger diameter pipes are the feed to the engine, the smaller diameter ones are for the return pipework.

Making your own doesn't require any special workshop tools. Just a scrap piece of wood and a few bolts.
Give it a go, you can't go far wrong.

Be careful to have it aligned properly before knocking it on, and be careful which part you "smack" as it is quite brittle plastic.
