As above. Try a Tdci before you buy. They aren’t like a Td5. I wish I hadn’t bothered getting one, only to return to the superior Td5.

I've done something similar some time ago, but instead of adding a self-tapping screw, I used a rivnut.
I did not add any additional fixings though, it seems to hold reasonably well so far.

I just drove across France in my 88" Series 3 soft to to go to the Mans Classic.
Totally doable, enjoyable even, just avoid motorways and stay on B and C roads and enjoy the scenic!
