Not quite. My wife bought a new Evoque today and managed to get it registered at 1600 this afternoon after the fault was fixed.

So here is the Million Dollar Question!

With so many things connected to the internet, lots of manufacturers who make products that are connected to what used to be called ‘the Internet of things’ don’t put cyber security high on their to do list. There has always been concerns that it could be quite easy for a hacker, organisation or Country (there have been worries about China and the vast number of cars produced there now), could just stop your vehicle or television or fridge freezer or anything that is connected to the web.

There are also concerns at how little security there are on the systems that control buildings. Could you imagine the implications if all the lights went out in the head office of a large organisation or the HVAC system started blowing cold air out in the middle of winter? It wouldn’t be as bad as hitting their servers but would cause enormous disruption.

l have often thought this. Even the lights on my mountain bike are connected to the internet. Recently they had a software update!

Although there's a lot of systems and l don't think disabling one would affect the others. But it's possible they could hack a vehicle manufacturer and brick all the vehicles with a software update. But l can't see how it could be global, for instance an attack on LR wouldn't affect BMW vehicles. But it could go back down the supply chain.

Concern is understandable but we are way far from “Skynet”… Smile
Uk at least has the PSTI Act which now requires IoT devices to meet minimum cybersecurity standards.
And mass scale attack on cars is not yet on the table. It has been proven though, if targeted, one vehicle could be remotely controlled by third parties… highly unlikely they’ll target me, I am poor, ugly and a bit fat.

I was speaking to my independent Land Rover garage this afternoon and they were saying all OTA updates have been suspended in case a problem is transferred to the car. 2023 Defender D300 HSE in Pangea Green

My local independent LR specialist said yesterday that they couldn't access anything to do with Land Rovers on their system.

l guess it's a total IT shutdown to mitigate damage. lmagine if the hackers got into the update firmware and bricked everyone's vehicle.

Yes I was told that by my main dealer on Mon 1 Sept, and confirmed by my local Indy the same morning.

Sounds like perhaps JLR got bit by a ransomware attack.

It's really the only thing I could think of that could lead to a multi-day outage like this. Every company has redundancies built into their (especially revenue-supporting) systems, but ransomware - if it gets into the backups - turns into a nightmare to resolve. 2022 Defender 110 SE P400 Tasman Blue Expedition and Cold weather package

Not sure if the news got over the Atlantic to the States but one of our biggest retailers, Marks and Spencer’s got the same sort of attack earlier in the year. They shut down all their systems after an attack at the end of April. It was reported to have cost the company £300M and they have only just got their online ordering system back in the last few weeks. They said working for M&S was hell on Earth during this time and you have to feel for their staff who had to keep the plates spinning.

I actually don’t think most companies take this risk seriously. From what I have witnessed, IT budgets are always the first to be cut and many of the systems large companies use are ancient, running on architecture that passed its sell by date. There is also an attitude of ‘it’s not broken, why fix it’. Or the concern that we don’t want to touch it in case it messes something else up. Most IT Managers know the elephants in the room but most accountants just see money.

Attacks like this will close the smaller business. They will just run out of cash or credit. A 100 year old haulage company in Kettering called Knights of Old closed after one single insecure password brought the company to its knees.

I don’t think this is going to bring Tata crashing down but spare parts might be difficult to get for the foreseeable future as this kind of attack is not usually cleared up by a quick scan with Norton Antivirus.

And what will happen with manufacturer warranties? I mean, if your vehicle, like mine, is under warranty and they have to respond to a customer complaint, and the parts procurement system is out of service for months, what happens if your warranty expires in the meantime? Who covers that? Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY
