As mentioned earlier, sound proofing has been on my mind for a little while. Not sure whether it’s the idea of sound proofing that is tempting me or just the idea of removing the old smelling carpet and replacing it by a smarter material.

In any case, after removing the floor carpets, i realised that quite a few floor bolts weren’t stainless steel. So decided to do the job right and remove the floors to fit now bolts and clips… all stainless.

So the floors are now back in place… and so it beginning. Trial my sound deadening approach with the middle section and see whether I like the material ordered.

Decided to go for dodo matts in black. I am trying to decide whether I want to put carpet or a hardura finish. Lucari seems to offer smart and durable options. Feels a bit more future-proof and mud-proof than a gold ole carpet. Thoughts?

Stainless bolts are great for many applications but they do need to be isolated from aluminium panels to prevent galvanic corrosion. Nylon washers and a thread coating such as Duralac are typical solutions.

As for a floor covering, I wouldn't go for carpet as there's a certain inevitability about water getting in and making them smell again. Darren

Thanks for the bolt tip Anorak.

Re flooring - do you have any recommendations? I ordered some hardura (PVC coated jute) to try. Do you have any thoughts on that or something else? Thanks

If it were me, I'd just go for rubber matting. Glue it to the vertical faces but leave the floor loose so that it can be easily removed for cleaning. I'd also be tempted to fit some 6mm self-adhesive foam to the vertical faces to aid with the sound proofing. The stuff you've used so far is great at reducing panel reverberation by adding mass but not at absorbing airborne sound. Having said that, the gains are probably marginal in that particular area. Darren

Thanks Darren.

I have been recommended this foam below… any thoughts on that?

Thinking about Hardura, I am now not sure whether having jute sit on the sound deadening is wise… jute absorbs humidity more than the foam above… mine field !

That's rubber matting rather than foam and being smooth probably isn't ideal in terms of slip resistance, to be honest. There are lots of different patterns available though, from chequer plate to spots to various rib widths. I favour a 3mm thick wide ribbed style, but the choice is yours:

I used Wright Off Road rubber matting http://www.wrightoffroad.com/
It's very heavy duty stuff and really helped reduce sound levels in my 110. I just cut it to size and layer it in. That way it's easy to remove for cleaning.

Thanks both for the tip. I already ordered some material, I will test that and see how I get on. Might change it later.

Btw - do you know where I could buy the black cappings shown on the following pic?

Thanks

Finished the sound proofing and tested the hardura on top. It looks pretty good. I thinking I might do the front in the same way

Next upgrade… front grille. Although I like the idea of a standard defender, I never was impressed with the flimsiness of the front grille plastic. Given that I use the car to green lane and the occasional light offroading stint, I thought I’d protect my radiator.

I have to admit I am also a sucker for the heritage look, so I went for a Nakatanenga grille. That’s the grille used by outlanders and lucari. Although it’s not the best quality steel, it is a definite upgrade to the stock one.

What do you think?

Although there’s still more to do on the car, I had a little play with a before and after montage.

I quite like where this is going so far…
