Still incomplete. The oil cooler/filter housing is leaking badly. Christmas order times mean a wait or an oem one for over £200. It needs an mot too so I’ll wait for the delivery and have a week off it over Christmas

This arrived this morning and was fitted this afternoon. Oil leak is no more and hopefully get it mot’ed tomorrow. I must have knocked the old one putting the engine in. The online manual has missing pages regarding the removal and refitting of the oil cooler when removing the engine. It just says “content not available” I should have just thought about it and taken it off. Lesson learned

I hope you do not need to put in action the lesson you learned any time soon. Good luck with the MOT.

I am not an engine builder, but done a few. Never one with a DPF. During assembly, I bath the bores, pistons/rings, the valves/guides etc with engine oil (bearings etc I use assembly lube). I have read conflicting information of what to do with engines equipped with DPFs. Did you take any precaution? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I used assembly lube on all bearing surfaces and low saps oil (as per useable in the engine) on valves and bores. Filled the pump with low saps whilst upside down and all in all used about 750ml in the engine whilst assembling including filter fill. It will only stay in there for 200 miles or so and then be replaced with fresh.

It passed the mot. Performs really well….. but it’s developed a rattle. Not investigating today I’ll check it out tomorrow. Might take rocker cover off and check all the rockers etc

Bit annoyed to be honest but i will figure it out

Mot man was impressed with the underneath and couldn’t get over how clean it was in general. He was a defender owner and thought it was a good one so the effort has been worth it.

I haven’t been on here much last couple of weeks due to the truck demanding my time

The rattle was a big end bearing. It had not been put in properly by me and sat slightly off the face on the crank resulting in uneven wear. So engine came out again and all was measured, checked and new big ends put in again. I decided that this time I would also replace the clutch slave cylinder and spigot bearing
Spigot is supposed to be a pig of a job. I simply knocked the back out of the old bearing into the space behind it using a big punch and heavy hammer and used an m8 bolt pushed to one side to draw it out. New one spent the night in the freezer and the crank was warmed with a blow torch. It slipped in with a light tap on a socket
The list so far of parts is long
Clutch
Spigot bearing
Slave cylinder
Rear crank seal x2
Full gasket set
Main bearings
Big ends x2
Oil pump
Pistons &rings
Oil cooler
Oil
Coolant
Sealant
Three knuckles
One finger nail
Many swear words

Sorry to hear the most recent issue occurred after all that hard work Si.

Glad you’re still maintaining a positive outlook and getting on with it!

It’ll be worth it in the end - better than new 👍

Back on the road today. No going to comment on how it’s running as it will decide to screw me over again.

So it did screw me over again. Looks like swarf from the pump/bearing had got into the oil ways in the crank and become lodged and resisted my cleaning efforts. It now has new crank pistons Conrods and is running. However it idles ok but is very smoky when revving higher and is very lumpy as the revs build. Not getting any codes relating to anything fuel or injection but has a very unburned diesel sting to the eyes.
Any suggestions what to be looking at.
Bear in mind this was running well bar for the big end repeatedly eating itself. But has been apart completely. Three times

Sorry to hear about that. Is it black smoke? I would have thought the dpf would block most of the smoke. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Grey smoke. Engine is currently only connected to turbo due to the smoke. The exhaust and dpf are two inches from the turbo so I don’t kill it by filling full of soot. Ancillary belt and fan are also removed. I’ve rechecked the timing chain this morning and all is good. Only dtc codes showing are maf related because it not there

Lumpy running at higher rpm, and greyish smoke would make me think an injection timing problem. I would be looking around the crank position sensor. Did you disturb the holder? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
